I inherited a ruger #3 carbine in 45-70 from my brother who passed away a few years back. I recently aquired a used buttstock for it that I don't mind butchering and putting a much more friendly recoil pad on. Now I am contemplating a scope for it. I don't ever plan to shoot it past 100yds. I am going back and forth on either a low powered fixed scope or a low power range variable. If its fixed, I was thinking something in the 2x or 2.5x range. If its variable, I was thinking of something in the 1-4 range. Price would be somewhere in the $300, either new or used. I want it to be lite as possible.

Leopold FX2 2.5x20 is an obvious option that comes to mind.

You may also want to give some thought to using Nikon's 3-9x40 that is designed for muzzleloaders and has a BDC 300 reticle. A musket shooting a 250gr bullet in a sabot with 150 gr charge of triple 7 runs about 2100 to 2200 fps (what the reticle is designed for) where a 45-70 with 250 gr bullet runs about 2025 fps so the ballistics are quite similar. Nikon Spot On App http://spoton.nikonsportoptics.com/spoton/spoton.html#:4 could also help. 5 inches of eye relief is also nice with the recoil. And I realize you may not plan past 100 yds but you might actually have some fun extending it out playing with it on the range sometime. We have been running our muskets out to 200 and 300 yds with good success even though most shots are under 100 yds it can be kind of fun.

For that #3 the 2.5 Leupold would be a nice compact fit. My 45-70 #1 has a 1.1-4 x 24 Kahles on it and it is nice as well. It is larger than a 1.5-5 x 20 Leupold I have and it is a perfect fit for a 3# carbine, too. |
