Recently I have put together my first AR 10 platform build. As of about 5 hours ago, I was set on moving forward with mounting a Vortex Viper PST Gen II 5-25x50 FFP EBR 7-CM MRAD for around the $800-$900 price point without rings. Hoping to catch it on sale by or on black friday... Of course with finally making a decision, comes an opportunity to throw a wrench into the mix... I have an opportunity to pick up a Leupold scope utilizing a 50% discount... This has me pointed in the Mark 5 HD direction... Question is - Is there a different Leupold scope I should be looking at instead to take advantage of this offer? Further down the rabbit hole.... My next gun will be a 6.5 bolt of some shape. (Planning on having this one budget funded and put together by next summer). Do I go beyond the Mark 5 for later intention of the 6.5, or at that point should I be looking at a different glass manufacturer? Budget for the AR-10 optic is about 1k +/- $200 (lets be honest, no take, always give....) Planned use: AR-10 prone and bench target shooting to about 600. 6.5 - Getting into 1000 and beyond. |

50% off is a good deal.
I like Mark 5 scopes a fair bit. I tested the 3.6-18x44 and I am now messing with the 7-35x56. I like both, but reticle selection is limited. Make sure you are OK with what they have. Aside from that, I think you can safely ignore whatever future projects you plan to have. New scopes come out all the time, so deal with the problem in front of you. Future problems can be dealt with in the future. If Leupold reticles work for you, get a Mark 5 3.6-18x44 and use your discount. That is a very nice scope for an accurate gas gun. Generally, I like this general mag and weight range for large frame ARs. To be more specific, I have PST Gen 2 3-15x44, Tangent Theta TT315M 3-15x50, March 3-24x52 (this one is the lightest of the bunch despite having the largest mag range) and a few other scopes that start out at 3x or so. I tend to refer to these as crossover scopes since they are equally at home on accurate gas guns, reasonably compact bolt guns, accurate hunting rifles, etc. With weird shooting positions or shooting offhand, usable low magnification and large exit pupil are good to have.
