Been toying with getting a 6.5CM for awhile and while looking found a Seekins in 6.5PRC. Salesman was telling me how great a 6.5PRC is over the 6.5CM, but not sure about the new caliber. From what I read there are gains, but a big decrease in barrel life. Plus I remember how great the 224 Valkyrie is and now I never hear about it. It's only going to be a target rifle.

I don't know if there would be advantages of getting the PRC if just a target gun... me... hunting yes, targets no.

250 fps gain over the creed.  For hunting it gives you about 200 yards more ethical energy for big game.

Right now only hornady makes factory ammo i think for the prc.  Some of the boutique shops may make it but it will be pricey.  Everyone makes creed ammo.

Target shooting the prc keeps you super sonic to 1700 yards in the right conditions.  The creed is 1550 to 1600.

A 10 mph full value wind at 1000 yards with the creed will need 8.5 mils the prc about 7 mils.  It will definitely help with the wind.

Since hornady is behind it their ammo will likely always be there.  The 143 eldx and the 147 are excellent bullets.

Barrel life, you are shooting around 25% more powder, so that will definitely take a toll on the throat.  Have Greg Young (bugholes.com) build you one with his "BugNut" and you can just have him chamber new barrels for you and you can put them on yourself.  Save you about $200 per barrel change.

I really "want" a prc, but will likely not get one.  I am heavily invested in the creed, I have 3 rifles, and multiple die sets and a couple thousand brass, so it would be hard for me to make the change.  But if I were starting over at this point I would get the PRC.

Should have asked how far are the targets.  Wink

I toyed with the idea of one, but decided - since the times I need pure hitting force, it is never at that range; and when I want reach for gongs, it doesn't need much ass when it gets there - I am good with my current stable of 6.5CM, 243AI, and 300WM.

If I did not own a 6.5CM AND a 300WM, I would probably get one. Since I do, I will watch as you fellers discuss yours.

It should shoot flat and buck wind, but I don't see any value in it till 1,000+, and I just don't get to 1k much any more.

Where we hunt it’s 300 yards max. so our Creedmoors do just fine.

Good info, thanks! Sounds like the PRC is more than I need right now, so will stick with the Creedmoor.

I've been thinking about a somewhat dedicated long range gun since I sold my 338LM and 6.5x47.  I will probably end up with either 6.5PRC or 300PRC.

Right now, I am leaning toward the latter, but we'll see.

I might wait until the MegaFix comes out.  It will be available with 300PRC.

But Ilya, how are you gonna do a proper comparative analysis unless you have BOTH, plus a 6.5 Creed?

Then, the next time this topic comes up, you can recite your recorded data rather than relying solely on extrapolation!

I use a 6.5X47 L so I don’t have a dog in this hunt. If I was in the market for a Creedmoor or PRC, I would definitely get the Creedmoor. The deciding factor for me would be availability of quality brass. Peterson is making brass with both small and large primer pockets and Lapua is now making Creedmoor brass too. I think Hornady is the only manufacturer of PRC brass, correct me if I’m wrong. I shoot out to 600 yards, never further. Many rifles and cartridges are capable of this so there’s no need to pay for a potential barrel burner.
On a side note, Peterson is expanding their lineup and will be offering WSM brass in the near future. That’s good news for me. I just sent a Model 70 bolt to get bushed and refaced because of leaking/blown primer pockets in Winchester brass. I was too cheap to pay for Nosler 300 WSM brass but in hindsight, it probably would’ve saved me some money.

I think we will start to see more PRC brass.  All the big manufacturers are chambering for it now.  The round is only a couple years old.  It took a long time for the creedmoor to catch on and everyone to start making brass for it.  Hopefully the prc will be the same.

As far as barrel burner goes.  Its not an over bore cartridge like may of the 6.5 mags are.  It was designed to give near magnum performance while not being an overbore round and quickly buring out a throat.  While yes it will wear a barrel out a little quicker than a creed, its just a result of 1/4 more powder.  They designed the 300 prc in the same way.  They tried to make them faster and better but still be right below that line of being a big overbore round that just wastes powder.  Both of the PRCs are likely two of the most powder efficient rounds every made.

Just curious but how many rounds difference are we talking about? Ball park number?

I am not sure on that.  I have not shot my creed near enough to burn a barrel yet.   They say a creed will burn out quite a bit quicker than a .308.  I am guessing 2000 to 2500 is likely where a precision barrel may start to see accuracy loss, but I am not certain.

So maybe 1500 to 2000 with the PRC.  Totally a guess though.

I have read a 26 nosler will burn a barrel in as little at 500 to 800 rounds.

We can probably all agree that’s it’s awesome to have so many choices. I’m also pleased that Hornady isn’t scared to invest the money in new cartridges. They were involved in the .204, 6.5 and .300 PRCs, plus the flex tips for lever actions. They also had a few that didn’t pan out. The .308 and .338 Marlins and the .30 TC. All were great ideas but if the don’t sell...
The worst barrel burner I ever owned was a .264 win mag. I’m kicking around the idea of a 6.5 WSM but it may be walk down the same path.

I want to hop on this thread and resurrect.....I have a few 260 rems and was thinking about a 260 AR just because.  While doing this, I thought about getting the AR in 6.5 CM instead, even though pretty happy with results from 260.

For whatever reason, I then changed my mind to a new bolt gun instead of AR.  So...my choices would be:

Tikka t3x tac in 6.5 CM (comes with 2 mags, mag would work in my CTR as well, coupon for additional free mag just expired, around 1,500 bucks).  I love Tikka rifles, very accurate, no complaints but something on the PRC just says since no investment in CM buy the PRC.....

Christensen Arms MPR Steel in 6.5 PRC (one mag, 3 rounder I believe, 3.0 max mag length, sexy looking, a bit lighter, cool factor of faster round, no investment in CM, hand load ammo anyways, about 50 bucks more)

I know I don't need either of these, and I haven't shot a rifle in over a year since moving...but I want one of them......decisions decisions....

Thoughts?
