I've got a PA 1-6 FFP, and its a great scope for what it is. At work I've got a Mark 4 3-9, super old but functional. Its literally the same size at the PA 1-6. I've looked at the new PA 1-8, it has my interest. However, something like the IOR Spartan in 2-12, at just under 12" long, also has my interest. So the issue is that all of these fall in drastically different price ranges. Can anyone speak to compact (10 inches long ideally, up to 12), midrange magnification (up to 10, 12, 14 power), optics, ideally FFP and mil/mil? I'm hoping I'm not after the elusive unicorn.

Is there a specific reason you need a short scope? I run a 3x Compact ACOG on one AR and like that and I run a 1-4 Trijicon Accupoint thats like 10.3 in 14.4 oz its on a 300 WM and is surprisingly good at 100 & 200 yds. To me when you step up to dialing in correction the scopes I listed above are the two I would trust for a gunfight if conditions required dialing in correction.

Purchase from IOR and US Optics at your own risk.
The Vortex razor 1-6 is a great scope, many don't like the weight, but it is short and glass is quite good, view at 1X is awesome. It is mil/mil and FFP, though is not "mid range." But, truth be told, I don't put it on anything with more than 500 yards of range anyway. The SWFA 3-9 is an awesome scope, in the range you want, but a little loner than what you want. It also isn't illuminated and the reticle is not ideal. On the unicorn, you may indeed be. |

If you’re uber serious about the “compact” part and are willing to ante up to get it, how about the March F “Shorty” 1-8x24 MIL (model # D8SV24FIML)? It is only 8.4”L, 17 oz, MIL/MIL, illumination, and optically outstanding. The downside is it has very short tube length for mounting, so your mount must clamp only behind the turrets.
They also offer a longer version of the same scope config that is 10” L that provides for conventional mount spacing fore and aft of the turrets, model # D8V24FIML, with all the same remaining features.

I have the Shorty and it kicks ass. If you do not need 1x, March is about to come out with a 1.5-15x42 and they already have 2.5-25x42 and x52 SFP along with 3-24x42 and x52 FFP. ILya

Yes, along with RifleDude and Koshkin, I immediately thought of March. I have the March 1-10x24 which I really like. It is 10.3" long, with a 1.3" objective bell, which allows one to mount it very low (another advantage in my opinion). It weighs 18.3 oz. The Razor Gen III 1-10 looks promising, however I'm curious how they overcome the 2.4mm exit pupil at 10x.

They cant overcome it. It will have more picky eye placement and darken the image some. It will perform about like a 20x with a 50mm objective.
They work, but just not as pleasant to use at max power vs mid power. But we all deal with that now on most scopes above 15ish anyway.
