Were the older Swarovski scopes, made in Austria, superior to the new models coming out now?  Specifically, was the older, made-in-Austria Swarovski Habicht 3-9x36A superior to the newer corresponding model, the Z3, 3-9x36?

As is almost always the case, definitions drive the conversation. What exactly do you mean by "superior"?

The old 1" tube 3-9s are still some of my favorite scopes, very clear, very bright, very dependable.

Yes, good point.  I meant optically--brightness, clarity of image.

I have not quantified in a side-by-side comparison, but I do use both, and don't see an obvious down-side to their older stuff. And by older, I mean the discontinued AV series.

In the 3-9 and 3.5-10, they are very bright and optically excellent - or mine are. If you can get one at a decent price, you should!

I don't own any Swaro scopes from pre-PH and AV series era. I do however own a few PH, AV, Z3 and a Z6i. The only "old" vs "new" side by side comparisons I can make from those I own are the 3-9X36 AV against the 3-9x36 Z3. I cannot tell any difference between those two scopes, apart from some minor exterior cosmetic differences.

I asked because, although I own a Z3 3-9x36, a very good-condition older Habicht 3-9x36A has come up for sale on the used market at what I think is an attractive price.  So, if the lenses and coatings were better in the older model, I'd probably snap it up.  I guess newer is often better, but you do hear of older models having superior features to newer models where cost-cutting steps have reduced quality.

RifleDude, I'm guessing that the Habicht 3-9x36A is the same scope as what you have referred to as a 3-9x36 AV.  The one for sale is the one with the green ring with the power-selection numbers on it seen below:

The asking price is about $420 USD.
