Just received a complete and working Zeiss Trocken Gerat. Fits the WW2 large form optics to perform drying. I have been in contact with Zeiss archives about it, to see if the had any info on it, Manual etc. But no luck, they did have a one sheet piece of information, but very basic, useful to go with it though. The device was last used with the Bundesmarine on FGS Hamburg(D181) (decommissioned in 1994). The device was removed from the ship during that time. Its very heavy. Oh and noisy too.

OK, so the two red hoses connect to the ports on either side of the optical carrier tray of the 12x60s, one in, one out. The pumped air passes through the dryer tray at the bottom that has two particle filters and is filled with silica gel. Keep passing the air in closed cycle until the meter drops as close to zero as it can, then remove and close of exit port and then the input port. The system should be dried out. I am looking for a way of incorporating a nitrogen feed into the air cycle somehow, which would assist in keeping the moisture out long term. Any thoughts on that?

Very Cool! And nitrogen should not be needed.
When it fogs, giver 'em another pass through the machine.

Well I'm in two minds about the Nitrogen at the moment. But it's something worth taking a look at. Especially as I am going to build adapters to take the Ross, Barr & Stroud connections as well as others. In finest British style the original device for drying the Ross, B&S binoculars was a bicycle pump affair. Really, why do we always have to do stuff like that? The other problem is that there is supposed to be two connector nozzles that go between the hose connectors and the optic 'trucken luft' ports. I don't have those, so something else to make. The existing connectors do fit but its a tight squeeze. I was not aware of the adapters until recently.

I was thinking of posting a video this weekend of this thing in action, doing its 'Thang'.
Would this be of interest?

OK, Hope this works. Tried to post a video, but it seems to only want 'youtube' videos. Does not allow it to be uploaded from my machine, no option for that. * Had another go with a better camera this time * Edited by DPI - March/06/2020 at 11:08 |
