I am looking for a tripod where I can attach a rifle to it and also swap out the head to utilize my spotter. I have a pig saddle and bog pod deather grip but neither really locks my rifle 12 pound rifle in place. Thoughts?

To get a really good solid one, expect to break open a few piggy banks.
This is the best low end I know of:https://www.kopfjagerindustries.com/online-store/K700-Heavy-Duty-Tripod-p57622272 You can spend from this amount up to $1500.00.

I would look for a Manfrotto tripod the old ones were Bogen Magpul makes a quick release adapter that attaches to the common Manfrotto RC2/Q2 interface quick detach mount. https://www.swfa.com/vortex-picatinny-rail-tripod-mount.html Vortex Picatinny Rail Tripod Mount when you look at this picture it as being upside down so that the Picatinny rail is on the bottom of the rifle and the 1/4 20 threaded hole is pointed down so the tripod screw can go into it. In any case the more solid the tripod the better but how much weight do you want to drag with you. I have an old Gitzo ball head that I really like they dont make this style today but you can find them on ebay used. The Bogen 3020 Tripod used would be an ideal choice. Both 3020 and 3021 are built for durability
with tough aluminum legs, when collapsed they measure at 25.75 inches
and when extended, it reaches 70.5 inches and they are heavy at nearly 6
pounds and a load capacity of 13.2 pounds.

Thank you, great info. I love that QD mount for tripod head. My big issue is the heads can't take some of my heavy rifles.
Again, Thank you all, great info!

I have a Pig Saddle as well and mount it to a Sirui N2004KX photo tripod. The new version of the tripod is the N2004SK but it has the same 33lb load rating. It is aluminum and isn't too heavy at around 4.5 lbs but Sirui also has a carbon fiber version that is lighter (and more expensive). I find Sirui to be well built and good value for money. I also run a Sirui K-30x ball head as well which has a load rating of 66lbs. The ball head is well machined, smooth and very solid. The ball head is arca compatible so I just mount a arca release plate to the Pig Saddle and my spotter to allow quick changes. My rifle is lighter than 12 lbs but it holds mine solidly. A more solid option may be to get a chassis with the arca rail machined as part of the stock allowing one to bypass the Pig Saddle entirely by mounting directly to the arca clamp.

MAJESTIC 1200 model BENCHER HEAVY DUTY Geared Tripod HeadThis is what I have on my heavy tripod and it is a beast up and down is gear driven and very precise side to side motion had adjustable tension. This will work with the really heavy stuff. These were originally about $350 so the used ones are a bargain. |

For a really solid connection, an arca compatible clamp can be mounted directly to the tripod allowing a Pig Saddle to be mounted directly to the tripod with an arca plate. This will bypass the need for any type of ball head at all, although you would lose the easy adjustment of a ball head. Arca clamps are available from many photo equipment makers similar to the Sunwayfoto below.
