I read a couple of forums that they were having problems with scopes holding zero with a 300 win mag I was wondering if the zeiss or Swarovski holds up good

The problems of scoping a 300 win mag most often come from inferior or poorly mounted rings. Remember Snug is not Tractor tight.

The size of the gun and the size of the projectile play a big part in this equation, as does whether the rifle has a brake or not.
300WM is my favorite caliber, it is easily scoped. And cheap scopes or bad rings do indeed account for most of the failures as recoil increases. |

.300 Mag in “sporter” weight rifles (in the ballpark of 7-8 lbs) is around the recoil threshold that starts to reveal problems with scope designs failing, if problems are lurking. But, as stated, there are multiple variables involved - rifle mass, load specifics, action mechanics, mount design, etc that have an influence.
I have heard reports of Swarovski AV and Z3 series scopes failing to maintain zero under heavy recoil and that they were a bit less suited to recoil than the remaining Swaro series scopes that use coil springs rather than leaf springs in their erector assemblies. I’ve not had issues with the AV/Z3 scopes on rifles with mild to moderate recoil, but I personally wouldn’t choose them for heavy recoiling rifles. I have a Swaro Z6 on a .300 mag and haven’t had issues with it maintaining POI on that rifle. I’ve not heard of any specific Zeiss scopes being failure prone under recoil, though I wouldn’t personally place any trust in the Terra series scopes...and not just for recoil resistance reasons. I think you’d probably be fine with Zeiss’s midrange and flagship models.

I gues it all depends who you talk to one person said he had three vipers on his and they all wouldn"t track after less than 50 rounds and one other said he has had a cheap bushnell on his for years. my Nikon works good but I"m looking for a little more magnification

I had a cheapo Simmons scope on a 300 Winchester and it worked okay....but I did eventually change it out just because I wanted a better scope.....

it's why people buy Nightforce scopes. all the problems of holding zero and won't track just seem to go away.

LOL, I had a Simmons ATEC on a .300wby Vanguard years ago. Think I was loading 84grn of 7828 under a 180grn NBT. That scope was great for a broke college kid that loved to shoot until one day it’s wasn’t. When it let go, I think everything broke at once. The reticle was about 60 degrees off and not centered, the windage dial just spun with no resistance and the elevation was just stuck. I’ve broken a lot of things in my day but I’ve never had an optic fail that catastrophically. Sounded like a can with loose sand in it. I sold that gun and didn’t go back to a magnum until a few years ago. My favorite magnum hunting rifle is a Sako 85 Finnlight in .300wm. Totally different game than the Weatherby. Plus it’s got a S$B Stratos on it.
