Just received a $500 pair of binos from an online store. This was listed as "New", not open box or demo. The seals on the box were cut and one part was missing. Otherwise it looks good.
I reached out to them about it and they mentioned that they open their binos for quality checks before shipping. I thought this was odd. I like getting a box that is sealed and I know for sure I am the first one opening it. Is this common practice for dealers to open a box? thanks in advance!!

I think that practice may vary among sellers. Most do not regularly open boxes as
you mention. It may be a returned item, the part missing is not good. What part was it ?

.yea....most likely a return....so many on line binocular buyers/tire thumpers open the box, play with them, and return what really should then be considered used bins ..which are wiped down and resold as new....disgusting procedure....but try not to think about it....

It should be mentioned that some brands do not have sealed boxes. Swarovski is one.

There also could be valid reasons to open a box. Example outer shipping box arrives crushes or dented in a manner that indicates rough treatment when shipping. If the dealer wanted to be certain that the internal product was not broken he might open the box to check, that way if it is broken he can ship a different one and not inconvenience the customer.
Humans are by nature curious so could be they got in an item which they were not familiar with and opened it to look at it. New employee perhaps. Now rather than splitting hairs about who got to touch it first remember someone put it in the box at the factory and its hardly like walking into the average gun store and buying something being sold as new...... that has been in the display case for six months and has handling marks on it. If it makes a huge difference to you then discuss it with the seller or simply return it and buy it somewhere else. We all have our preferences and rather than being upset fix the problem and be happy. I have found that even the best sellers occasionally make an error, but if you tell them about it they fix it and make it right, what more could you ask?

Thanks. The dealer has promptly dealt with the missing item matter, so that is a good sign of professionalism from them.
I am used to the firearm sellers verifying the serial number, but not on optics. I thought about returning the binos, but I think I'll just hold on to them -I've been waiting to use them!! Not to mention the hassle of shipping the item back. I have given them a decent inspection and don't see any scratches or dings.
