Got a deal on a Marlin Model 60 from a local pawn shop.  Mounted on the rifle was a beautiful condition El Paso Weaver V4.5.  My question is what’s so special about the V4.5??  I’ve seen other V series (V7, V9) that are priced way less.

Nothing is extra special about the V 4.5. Maybe it's a little harder to find.

1-4.5 gives a wider field of view on the low end. This is a big advantage if hunting in heavy cover or areas with limited distance to target because of terrain. I have failed to make shots or get on target on deer where there are limited distances using a V 3-9X. Target was too close to see where to shoot. Same with squirrels. They are harder to find in a scope that is over powered for the cover.
Folks ain't got a sense of humor no more. They don't laugh they just get sore.

Need to follow the rules. Just hard to determine which set of rules to follow
Now the rules have changed again.

Very astute, My Upstate buddy.....but that would not explain why they are costing more.

"RARE" as I was young back in the late 60's. I too, in ignorance wanted the 3-9X or higher power. After missed oppurtunities from the over powered scopes in heavy cover Weaver El paso was gone. Affordable low variables were few. Even now the quality low power scopes tend to be higher priced because of lower demand leading to higher price to pay for the production run.
