Hey guys,

I need some advice on a good scope.  I'm purchasing a Remington 700 VSSF for coyote/varmint hunting and want to buy a scope that'll trancend time and applications.  I'm looking at a Leupold VX-II 4-12x40 in a German#4.  Is there any other scope that really compares to this one for the money?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks, TriggaSqueeze

The German #4 is designed for big moving game. If you want a scope that transcends applications, consider the standard Duplex version.

Ok...the duplex works for me also.   How about the magnification?  Leupold makes thier VX-II avail. with a 4-12x40 and a 6-18x40.

I want a higher power for longer shots but is a 6x min. too much for quick aquisition?

Thanks again

This is a matter of personal opinion. I happen to prefer as low a power as possible. If your rifle is very well fitted to you, you can acquire quickly with fairly high power. Fast moving, big, close-up game can still be a problem though.

If you want the facts, Leupold's web site gives FoV at distance for every scope, so you can see what you are loosing at higher powers.

I'd consider the Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16x50.  Its a bit more expensive but was highly recommended by Chris on the old Shooters.com forum.  It would be hard to find a better quality more versatile scope.

My mistake.  It's exactly the same price.

Does the Bushnell have the same exellent warranty and guarantee as the Leupolds?  I was also told that (for the price) the Nikon Monarch's are great as well.

I want to buy one scope to last untill my grand kids get tired of hunting...
