I picked up my Winchester 1885 High Wall in .300 H&H Magnum today (the ORIGINAL 300 Magnum). Gunsmith finally got a new CNC machine back after his was destroyed by vandals. Scope is a Hi-Lux 18 inch Gold Capped Wm. Malcolm 6x. I love it. I've not fired the rifle yet, but I did get it boresighted today. It WILL get zeroed tomorrow...

The ring mounts were designed for the 1885 High Wall, so we were able to leave the iron sights on..which made me very happy. A scope failure does not doom a hunt/defeat a shot. Doesn't get much better than that.
If I hunt this year, it will be with this rifle.

Interesting rifle apparently it was also made in .375H&H , an Iowa legal deer cartridge where the 300 H& H is not. This year Iowa went with 35 cal and larger.... so I've been struggling with a new .375 H&H Encore barrel, which is now at the gunsmith. Good thing my Henry single shot 44 mag rifle is dead on at 100. Seems like Iowa is really pushing us toward 350 Legend even brass and ammo are available. I don't understand why they didn't just bring back 38-55 it was a great deer cartridge. I really should have bought a takedown Winchester 38-55 that I came across about 4 years ago, but passed on due to lack of ammo and brass availability at the time. It's getting to where one has to select caliber based on what brass can be found.

Beautiful high wall Dan.
My brother would be envious of it except for the caliber.

I've tried several times today to zero... winds gusting to 40+mph (per Kestrel). Not only is that not conducive to zero, on 3 occasions the target was blown over before I could get back to my shooting table. I quit.. for the day.

He prefers the older black powder cartridges in the 32 to 40 calibers. He's in to punching holes in paper. Not killing the tree to make the paper like you

Got it... As for trees... ONE little tree (that was already defective)... BTW, it rained ALL NIGHT last night, over 3 inches... just finished straightening up my driveway. We are now at 83 inches of rain for the year. Clear right now, but temperature continues dropping... it was 57degF when I got up this morning, 49 now. Winds still gusting at 10-15mph. I miss the desert...

I learned a lesson today.. the Wm. Malcolm scope is NOT for the impatient man... fortunately, that has never been me. It is still in one piece, not dented and still functional... and nearly zeroed...
