FWIW for anyone considering a compact laser rangefinder:
I tried both side by side for a day last week; when it comes to consistency of ranging and the maximum range capable under given atmospheric conditions, the Bushnell beat the Leupold consistently by up to 200 yards. I was surprised. The optics on the Bushnell are easier on my eye. The Leupold, on the other hand, has a slew of nifty functions including ballistic estimator, inclinometer, thermometer, compass, true ballistic range based on target inclination, and had a feature strictly for bow hunters. While these are nice, I found them to take some time to toggle between, and using some features cancels out others. I'm a long range shooter; I need a rangefinder that can consistently give at least an 800 yard plus return in midday sun. I tested both in an area I know very well, and found the Leupold could not give returns consistently beyond 600 yards under the same conditions the Bushnell would hit almost 900 yards (which, buy the way, is 23.5 moa for the 300 Win loads I was shooting. I don't really have to hit the groundhogs at that range; a 240gr Sierra has a pretty good blast radius ; ) Finally, the Leupold uses a special lithium cell battery; the Bushnell uses a standard 9V, whch I like better. I was surprised, because I had bought the Leupold thinking it would outperform the Bushnell I already had. Not so, and of to eBay it went. |
