I have a sort-of odd question about Kentucky.

I am attending a convention in Louisville until Thursday and I am wondering if any of you are familiar with the city and could recommend some sights or venues that I should try to visit while I'm here.

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

Lucznik - Glad to lend a hand!

You definitely want to visit the Frazier Historical Arms Museum (829 W. Main Street).   Plan for a half-day there, at least.  This museum has everything from Kentucky rifles and Annie Oakley and Teddy Roosevelt guns to armor on loan from  the Tower of London.  They also recreate sword fight scenes from Shakespeare's plays (like Romeo and Juliet), with a running commentary as they do it.  It's new, and was bankrolled by the heir to one of the Kentucky bourbon fortunes.

Just across the street within a block is the Louisville Slugger baseball bat museum (800 W. Main Street), also an interesting tour.

The Filson Club historical museum has one of Daniel Boone's rifles.  It's a relatively small museum, without a lot else, but if you want to see this...

The horses run a Fall Meet at Churchill Downs.  Call or check your schedule against their web site.  The Derby Museum can be interesting.  Buy yourself a mint julep at the track, and get a Kentucky Derby glass if you wish.  (One formula for a mint julep is to (1) Get some good Kentucky bourbon;  (2) Mix some sugar and branch water at the bottom of a julep cup or glass, and then crush some fresh mint into it; then (3) throw away the mix and drink the bourbon.)  They make good sipping on a hot day at the races.  This time of year, though, you'd better take some warm clothes.

If you want some good Kentucky Bourbon, try Old Weller Reserve or Rebel Yell  (sold below the Mason-Dixon line) or Makers Mark (less sophisticated but very smooth).  Rebecca Ruth makes some good dark chocolate bourbon balls, which are a good "take home" item.

Have a good trip, and enjoy yourself!!

We have clients on both sides of the river.  The whole area is pretty and lots of good food.  Those who are "small town" may quickly find themselves in areas they are not comfortable with downtown.  There is not a lot of transition areas.  Hey, its lots better than down Cincy, Covington or Newport.

You can go across the river and pet the tank at Kesslers gun shop.  Fort Knox is a short drive to the Patton Museum.  The log cabin that President Linclon is also down in that area.  A drive along the river is a must.  There are some nice places to eat along the river.  Fuzzy Zellors Golf Course is less than a half hour north of the river.  The gambling "boats" are on the northside of the river. You can still get a paddlewheeler rides on the Belle of Louisville.  Out east past the Baptist and Luthern College is the yuppie area which has a Filson dealer, they also have some Orvis and Barbor stuff. Bass Pro is on the north side of the river. One Stop Knife Shop is on the east side of Louisville, but I do not know if they are open for retail.  There are the nuddie bars... but I prefer to stay out of that part of town.  There are some nice hotels along the river, and nice clothes shopping for the wife, but there is some seriously trashy stuff there too.

Thanks for the help guys!

Actually, part of the convention included an all-day jaunt to Churchill Downs on Sunday.  We spent the day in the Jockey Club Suites, which was way cool. So, that part at least, was covered.

I will definately seek out the Historic Arms Museum as well as the Louisville Slugger museum.  Probably on Wednesday.  I heard about some "diamond mine" that's supposed to be just a couple of hours south of Louisville.  That's something I would really like to go through (I love caves) but, I just don't think I will have enough time to get there before it would be closed. It might be worth a try though...

Followup to Lucznik:

Glad to be of help.  If you like caves, you might like to know that Mammoth Cave is only about 100 miles southwest of Louisville.  This is one of the largest underground cavern systems known to man.   Definitely worth a trip, if it fits into your schedule.  We never heard much about a "diamond mine", even though we grew up in Kentucky.  Enjoy your trip!
