I intend to mount a red-dot sight on my .30-30 Win. 94 AE lever gun. It would be used primarily on European boar hunting trips where fast target acquisition under low light conditions is crucial.I have been following the forum for quite some time and find the pooling of experience of knowledgeable huntsmen a brilliant idea. Helping others in getting started serves all of us in preserving our hunting heritage.I have never used a dot sight myself. How would it perform under low light conditions ( or with stock mounted lights)? Would the dot actually be visible for the boar - these shots are short, mostly within 30 yards in dark creek beds and mud holes? Beyond this issues I have difficulties finding steel Weaver style rails or bases. Thanks for any feedback. |

Dot sights are very easy to use and very effective for low light hog hunting. The sight itself does not make your view brighter so your target will be the same brightness with or with out the sight. A stock mounted light would help for sure. The dot is only visible from behind the rifle. I would highly recommend the Nikon Monarch VSD. It has the ability to change the dot size and brightness. Don't know of any steel Weaver bases for a 94 either.

Thanks for the advice. It seems I have to put some more research into finding a suitable platform for the dot sight.
