I'm about ready to buy a new scope and have narrowed my choices down to a Leupold 3.5x10x40 and a Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40. I really like the German # 4 reticle. In reading the Leupold catalog about their reticle configurations, it shows that the # 4 is more than twice as heavy as their heavy duplex on the thick posts as well as the thin posts. It also shows that the thin opening is about 5 times as wide. Am I right about this or am I confused. Such a wide opening just seems like a lot. It's even wider than the new wide duplex reticle. Also how does the Zeiss # 4 compare as I haven't seen their stats. Thanks

Your a little off with you assessment. The German #4 is not quite as bold as the heavy duplex. Any time you are comparing German optics with any others..... go with the German quality every time. Here are the comparisons:
The Zeiss #4 is basically the same as the Leupold. See how the ends are rounded on the #4 Leupold. The Zeiss is squared off more. Edited by Brady |

Thanks. I can't make up my mind between the Leupold VXIII 3.5x10x40 and the Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40. They are both great scopes and each has its good points. These are about the upper limit of my budget. One thing I'm having trouble with (maybe it's just my warped mind) is I'm considering a top end scope from Leupold and a bottom end one from Zeiss. Is Zeiss that great that their bottom line is as good as USA's best

It really doesn't matter. The real test would be to mount you selection, on your test rifle and after setting up your test shot, get a Competition Electronics or Pax timer and see how fast you can make the shot from a Taylor ready position. Average 10 or so under various weather conditions. (Perhaps American dew thaws slower on Euro scope lenses) Who knows you might save a few bucks when you find the less expensive is just as fast. The point is that there are far too many variables (especially the ones that are not in print) to conclude based on two manufacturers spec. sheet who aren't even reading the same sheet music!

"Is Zeiss that great that their bottom line is as good as USA's best" When put that way I can see how it can warp the mind. Zeiss doesn't have various qualities in their line of scopes like most other lower brands. Its either a conquest or a VM/V. So what I'm trying to say is there wont be a drastic decrease in quality when your dealing with the "bottom line" Zeiss. To refresh my memory I took the two scopes your having trouble with, and compared them outside this morning. I looked through the Leupold for about 5 minutes to let my eyes adjust to the quality of the scope. Then I through the Zeiss up to my eye and could immediately tell the difference. The Zeiss is clearer brighter and all around better. Even the European style focus it offers is another advantage over the Leupold. The conquest will be better than any Leupold, Burris, Bushnell or any other non German quality scope you wanna throw at it. Hope this helps with some of your deliberation. |
