Hello,

I just bought a Weatherby vanguard .257 Mag and I need a scope and mounts for it. I hunt whitetails in Northwest Texas and my longest shot will be 300 yds. I hunt from a box blind and as usual it seems that any buck worth taking comes out only at the verge of legal hunting daylight. Thanks for any input.

Check out the Nikon sale at SWFA. Also lots of nice used Leupolds on Ebay. S&K mounts would look nice on that WB. Check out http://www.scopemounts.com/    (they are available from Brownells @ discount)

Thanks,

I have checked out the Nikon sale and have been leaning toward on of the factory refurbished 3x9x40 for 149. Would I be able to see a deer better with cheaper optics and a bigger objective or better optics with a smaller objective?

I was thinking what is the difference between a 30 mm Zeiss or a 50 mm Burris. That is what is confusing me. I just don't know how much of a difference the quality of the glass makes as compared to the size of it.

30mm is the tube size 50mm is the objective lens size.(apples & oranges) Since you hunt from a rest a 50mm objective might have some early/late shooting advantage on an equal quality scope. i.e. a 40mm on a $400 scope is probably superior to a 50mm on a $200 one.Look at SWFA and m-i-d-w-a-y.

look at the monarch UCC's on closeout at www.swfa.com - pick the largest objective you can afford, and

sit until the last minute of legal time - they are great, bright scopes.

I agree.  Also, remember, SWFA, has a 110% price guarantee.  No I do not work for them, but its worth considering, since they put up the money for this site.  Yes, I know it brings people here and they buy scopes, but if they are willing to beat and undercut the competiion, there is nothing wrong with that.

The Nikon sale prices can not be beat as at this time. Stock is starting to run short by what I have heard so you might want to look into a Monarch soon.

I bought a monarch ucc 3x9x40 from the sample list because they were sold out of the new ones. Paid $199.95 and I think it is a pretty good deal. Now I just have to get mounts and I can go shoot. Anybody on here shoot a Weatherby 257 mag? I am just wondering about how much recoil I can expect. I am thinking it is going to be more than my 270 was but less the my 7mm mag was.

If it weighs the same as the 270, you probably won't see much difference in recoil. In spite of their style (?) WB stocks are quite recoil friendly. Just don't shoot rapid fire as it is a hot round that will wear out a bbl faster than your 270. It wont do anything in practical hunting that your 270 will not and do less than the 7 Mag but it's a fun toy.
