I agree, but a standard Vanguard synthetic is ss, in a 300Wby. with a SWFA clearance Nikon Monarch 5.5x16 44mm Nikoplex reticle.  Thats about 500 for the rifle and 302.95 for the scope.

tikka T3 lite - 7mm08 or 30.06

monarch UCC scope - 42mm or 50mm - on sale

either that or the 7x56 meostar, or the 6x42 IOR.

my 2 cents.  the T3 is the best bang for the buck and super accurate.

Guys, just an observation & I don't want to sound argumentative but from reading these posts about the optics chosen I sometimes get the impression that I'm one of the very few who shoots in heavy close cover.  I had used a 3-9 scope once but even at 3X all I could see was fur at close range & didn't give me the FOV I was looking for.  If the intent of the orignal thread is a "do all one rifle/scope"  wouldn't a lower power variable be a better choice? Could still crank it to 5 or 6X depending on the model for longer shots.  As you can probably guess I have not been fortunate enough to hunt in mountains or plains.

Just wondering.

Savage Model 14 American Classic in 308Win and IOR 6x42 Hunting scope with 4a reticle  for general use.

If you expect a lot of time in the brush:

Tikka T3 Big Boar in either 308Win or 30-06 and Burris Signature Safari 1.75-5x32 with illuminated Taper Plex reticle
or CZ 550FS cambered in the same calibers and with the same scope (CZ also comes with nice iron sights).

Reminton Model 7 in .350 Remington Magnum ($719.95)

Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 BDC ($218.95)

Plus TT&L = $1016.

edited because I miss read your original post, I read "larger than 8mm"

Remington Model 7 in .260 ($719.95) or Remington 673 in 6.5 Rem. Mag ($650.00)

Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 BDC ($218.95)

These two Remingtons are as close as you can get to a custom light weight rifle (in my opinion) and all the ones I've had were shooters.  I picked the .260 because of its excellent sectional density, retains very good energy at long range and penetrates very well (140 gr. . )

My first deer rifle was a Model 600 in .243, that might be why I like the model 7 and new 673 so much.

Yea the sako extractor is worth at least the $38. over. althouogh I would rather have it in a 30-06 or 308 because ammo is so much more available and I think I'd stick with a Nikon Monarch as they are a good value right now until they disappear.

I'd go a for a Remington 700 Police LTR in .223 Rem. May not be the best hunting gun but I like the way it feels and shoots. A day can go by pretty fast in a pasture full of rocks and golf balls to shoot up.

We sold one on GunBroker.com a while back for $605.00.

I would have to scope it with a Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest off the samplelist.

Here is another option:

Tikka T3 deluxe(or .308):

Nikon Monarch Mil-Dot:

It's hard to make a bad choice with any of the ones mentioned...most of it is situational to your environment...many countries who still allow private firearms ownership are not as diverse in their firearms/optics selection....God Bless the USA!!
