so i finished up my test last batch of test loads for this rifle today and nothing real stood alone as real impressive, so i had a wild hair to go to rugers web page and check my twist rate, and they show a 1:9.5 so i am wondering if maybe i am using to light of a bullet, the twist chart i have from lilja barrels show 1:10 works for everything from 140-160, but then the 1:9 twist shows 150-175, so would i really be using to light of a bullet??

what bullet was you shooting ? can you get anything heavier than 142 150 in a 6.5 ? and you might try that match king ! and are you using a boat tail its rare you over stabilize the bullet my 7mag shoots 100 gr speer hp flat base under 1/2"and 120 x shocks are awesome it 1:9 so you might try a slower burning powder like A 8700 if it shows you can?

1:10 is generally considered ideal for 140 gr. bullets. In .284, anything from 1:9.5 - 1:11 is recommended for 140s. Though a little on the fast side, 1:9.5 twist should work fine, but probably works better for some of the longer 140 gr bullet designs. 1:9.5 is a "compromise" twist designed to work with pretty much all 7mm bullet weights 140 and heavier. You might try some 150s and see if they work better. |
