I have just returned from my first hunt for the 2007 season and had tp pay school fees all over again! I have hunted kudu for many years and had come to the conclusion to use the heaviest bullet my rifle can throw, without to much drop out to 300m. In my 300H&H that is a 200gr bullet.

Due to a new barrel and struggling to find the correct velocity and accuracy before the hunt I was talked into using a 165gr Spartan (monolithic copper) bullet. Great accuracy.

I shot 4 kudu and 4 springbuck. The head and neck shot buck went down, no problem. But the other, shot in the chest vital area had a lot of go left in them. I shot a kudu bull that went down, thrashed about and got up again. Unfortunately due to thick bush I could not get a second shot in. Only a little blood was found a the spot, with no blood trail. A springbuck, shot through the engine room and breaking the far leg, carried on and had to be put down with another shot.

So, monolithic are great for little meat damage. They probably also work in the big calibres, heavy gr like 250 up.

But for me, I will go back to lots of lead. 200gr Hornady, Gamekings etc. No question, put a hole in the buck, the bigger the better.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, 8shots!  A good reminder that in the big "more penetration is always better" debate, it's also important to remember that penetration shouldn't come at the expense of proper expansion along the way.
