I would take the gun back to the store where you got it and get your money back......or have them fix it if you like the set-up.

Hi, storm. Thought I've never encountered this issue with a Sako, I see this every now and then with rifles chambered in the short mags. Try this... chamber a single round with an empty magazine below it, then see if it still has the same ejection problem when you extract the case with no other rounds beneath pressing against it. If it still does, it may simply be a geometry problem inherent to the larger diameter short mag case combined with the extractor width and short action length. If it doesn't, this problem could be due to the fact that when the bolt is retracted far enough so the bolt head clears the next round in the magazine, the magazine full of fat cases rises up and exerts a lot of upward pressure against the ejected case, putting the rim in a bind against the extractor and causing poor ejection or abnormal ejection angle. I haven't played with a Sako in a WSM chambering, but in some rifles, the internal magazine dimensions are really scaled for use with the "conventional" .473" case head dia cartridges, so the short mags occupy more magazine space and compress the follower spring more. If this is the case, you may have no choice but to pull the bolt back against the ejector more gently while tilting the rifle to the side. Not very convenient, but you may have no alternative. You could also buy a spare Sako extractor and try incrementally grinding off part of the claw a little at a time on the upper edge of the extractor to reduce the amount of extractor contact with the rim. Just thinking aloud here; again, I've never tried troubleshooting this problem on a Sako, and I've not seen this problem with Sakos chambered in .473" case rim cartridges.

I'd think about getting a one piece base, You may have to have the reciever drilled, and you may also have to modify the base alittle in order to clear the ejection away from the scope. I had a simialar problem with rounds hitting on a scope on a ruger m77 the base fixed that.

I have heard of ejection problems especially with the short mags. This problem has yet to come my way with my 300 WSM Ruger M77 Frontier compact. To check, I made some dummy rounds, loaded the magazine, closed the bolt and ejected every one cleanly without hitting my scope. I did this several times without any problems. Also, I have never had a problem at the range or in the field either..............If anyone discovers the problem, please let me know!

The feeding problems I've seen were with Rem 700 short actions originally chambered for one of the .308 cartridge family rounds that were converted to a WSM and had a Sako extractor installed. To get it to feed properly, the magazine rails have to be machined open slightly toward the front, the existing magazine box has to be replaced with a wider version, and the feed ramp has to be modified. Even then, you can still have problems with feeding and ejection with more than 2 rounds in the magazine. These were all modified bolt actions originally designed for standard short action rounds, not rifles originally chambered for a WSM.

The easiest solution is to send the rifle back to Sako, or ask the dealer for an exchange. Of course, I would try the new rifle before taking it home. Otherwise, If the problem only occurs with cartridges in the magazine, another option would be to buy a leaf spring with 10% less strength, or more and see if that solves the problem. I know they can be purchased for other brands of rifles and many are interchangeable, but I have never worked on a Sako. Its interesting that this thread came up, given the article in gun-tests.com, as they stated that while the 85 is advertised as a controlled feed action, that it was very sloppy and did not really control the round until it was essentially in the chamber. Now, what if anything this has to do with this problem I do not know, especially considering we are dealing with two totally different cartridges, but two rifles with action issues is somewhat more than a curiosity.

Keep in mind, storm's stated problems are not with feeding, but ejection, and not ejection per se, but angle of ejection, causing the case to hit the underside of the scope. If you look at the Sako boltface geometry from the front, the ejector is at 6:00 and the extractor is at 10:00 during ejection, causing the ejection pivot angle to be high. So I really believe that slightly grinding a little material off the upper side of the extractor (side closest to 12:00) will lower the ejection angle a little because there would be less bite on the rim on the upward side.
As-is, it sounds like the gun isn't necessarily defective, it just doesn't eject the short, fat WSM case at an optimal angle for the scope / mount setup. Edited by RifleDude |

I can't imagine Sako would be okay with this..........I would talk to them. Nobody will be happy with this if it happens with similar calibers/rounds!

My only beetch about the SAKO's is they screwed the pooch BIG TIME with their ejector positioning!!!!! At least mine and the TRGS in 30-378 I have had will not work with tall turrets! For example If you have M1 turrest you shoot, work the bolt, spent brass hits the turret and returns in the mag! Sux! So I have to get like CDS height turrets or lower? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAlCcC45n50 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7_1h1jeKuA http://www.opticstalk.com/ejection-proplem_topic8397.html

I read somewhere (24 hr campfire I think) that the Sako's just needed a stronger spring. Lots of info here http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/11894234/2 |

The Tikka 300 WSM I have works flawlessly. I had a Sako A7 in 300 WM and the magazine was not long enough to run all loads made to loading data specs, It went back and was replaced by an R5 Rem in 300 WM - Scheels provided exceptional customer service on that issue.
