Given that it has what Hoyt called their "Fall Blend" camo finish at the time and the fact it does have the string silencers added, this bow was setup for hunting.  But, with different sight, rest, stabilizer and using competition style arrows, the same bow worked well for various forms of competitive archery during its time.  There have been quite a few improvements in bow design since then, however.  It also depends on what class of competition you're talking about and whether you're talking 3D, Field, indoor archery, etc.  I used to compete in 3D archery, and that was a commonly used bow in the hunter class using non-moving sight pins.

Nice looking bow. I just ran across a Ben Pearson (cougar) Long bow from around the early 80 or late 70’s. It was the last thing I ever got from my dad. I forgot I had it. I’m trying to find out what they are bringing to sell for a new scope.

Since I'm in Tulsa I will be at the show if we do not get swamped before the show. and Big daddy I had a cougar also. I thought mine was older than that. It finally delamed from using it for fishing.

Huh, I figured it was a sound suppressor.  Ya know, shoot the arrow through it and it will help muffle the sonic crack.  Shocked  I always wondered how they fit the broad heads through it though.Robin%20Hood

Chris I would suggest you take it to a bow shop that deals in Hoyt bows and ask how much they will give you for it. Then you know it is worth at least 50 to 100 more than that. I think you can still sell bows on ebay but a guy buying a bow will need to know what draw length it is and what pound weight it takes to draw the bow.  Some of the Hoyts have a cam that is adjustable for draw length others dont which means that sales are limited to people with a certain length of draw.  A quick eximination by a pro should tell if the bow is in good condition or needs a new string or has problems.  NOTE:  Do not dry fire a bow it must have the resistance of an arrow against the string every time or it will damage the limbs and they will have to be replaced.  Point is there is much to go wrong and only a very knowledgable person can set up a bow properly.  Since you already have the bow when you take it to a bow shop ask if they have any practice arrows you could use to test fire it with - likely they will have a range inside the store.  If the bow fits you lucky you if not  it could be traded for one that does fit you if you so desire.  I will say that becoming a bow hunter opens up many posibilities to hunt that simply do NOT exist with firearms.  Ask a Texas Parks and Wildlife officer about it.  You are very likely to find as a bow  hunter you can ask permission from land owners to  hunt FREE on their property and they will agree. To begin with they dont think you are going to get anything anyway and they sure aren't worried you will shoot up their tractor or barn or cattle.  Forget places that sell their hunting rights but genuine farmers will often let you hunt - FREE.  You need a tree ladder stand  some scent killer spray a Primos  bow hunting video.  Its a huge learning curve because you have to become a better hunter but its really cool the first time you have a deer walk right under you close enough to pet him.

And that's where the fun comes in.  I've shot enough deer that it takes a mighty nice one to get me excited about shooting it with a rifle, but a nice fat doe gets me shaking all over when I'm bow hunting.  It took me four years to get my first deer with a bow, and then several more to do it consistently.  Hog hunting gives you year round opportunites and they are just as hard to kill as a deer; sometimes harder.  And if you miss, nobody knows unless you tell them Wink

It was about 20 years ago, yes. It was 10 years old when this thread was created, which was itself 10 years ago.
