What kind or brand should I use to lube the turrets of my SS? They seem to get stiff after a week or two of sitting.Thanks-Ron

Ron

DO NOT SPRAY anything on them, use a LITTLE vasileen on the rubber oring and all will be good for a long time.

Shouldn't he use some type of silicon based lubricant rather than a petroleum based, such as Vaseline? Then again, I guess it's not a problem if the 'rings aren't actually rubber (which I highly doubt they'd be).

I can't speak to what chemicals would deteriorate the seals.

I would think that you will run the risk of losing your "clicks" with anything heavier than say WD-40.  Especially in cold weather.

Any oil will provide a adhesive for dust and dirt, perhaps adding to any problem or creating a problem in the future.  I would suggest not trying any lubrication.

Actually Nodark is probably correct, I've always used vasileen, but a silicon based lube would probably be better. Cory some types of ball bearing grease would probably work well to, just use whatever very sparingly. You just dont want to spray something like WD, because it is a penetrant, the scopes are supposed to be water proof and all, but you dont want to test it. I usually remove my turret caps and clean things on a fairly regular basis depending on the usage, mainly because of the lube gathering dust and dirt, which is probably the case with Rons scope, just dirty.

To make them not stiff after sitting for a while you need to run the adjustments all the way to the end and then back to the other end...over and over and over and over.  This does two things, its laps the adjustments and it spreads out the grease that most likely is concentrated in one area.

Go to any auto parts supply and ask for Dielectric Silione grease. ( Spark plug boot lube)
It is waterproof by nature and non-hardening.

You can also use vasaline. While it is petroleum based it dries to a fine powder, which serves as a lube and does not bind, but you would need to re-apply at regular intervals. intervals.

No matter what you choose, apply to the "O" ring directly to lessen the chance of excess running into the scope body over time.

whatever you choose, make sure to use a "light coat", cause the heat will make the thick grease become thin and as Mike mentioned, it may get into places you don't want it to

Took your advise and found some Dielectric Silicone Compound [For Electrical Systems] at my local NAPA store. Stock number is 765-1190 if they don't have it right now. Price was$6.88 total for a tube that has 1.25 oz. net. Already worked on an old Weaver variable that I had re-built by the guy in Texas [name escapes me at the moment]. The variable was so tight I could hardly turn it. A few minutes of my time and a toothpick and it now turns without effort. GAWD I love the info one can get of these boards.

Got home tonight to find my SS16X42 waiting on the front porch. Nice scope, gun shop finally got my Savage 12BVSS in .223 in, will PU Saturday morning and mount scope. Turrents were so mushy I couldn't believe it, no clicks what so ever, and difficult to turn. Got out my tube of grease [see above post] and put an ever so slight amount of grease on inside of turrent. Now I have clicks. Factory needs to spend a couple of bucks and do this in house. Got the sunshade, Butler Creeks, MilDot Master, and a SS sticker [which came apart in packing, guess I really didn't need it anyway]. Looks like it is going to be a nice looking rig with the Leupold mount and rings. Giving myself a nice Christmas. Oops, now I have to find some money quick for the wife!

tenring,

Sorry about the sticker. Sometimes they get placed improperly in the box. I will get you some out in the mail today on us. Do you have any koozies? I'll throw in a few of those as well. They're the cool slap kind that fit any can or bottle. Don't drink and shoot though. Heck I'm feeling so generous I'll throw in a cool SS shirt for you. (Just for you though.)
