Hey Guys,

Need help.  I am new to scopes and just purchased a Winchester Model 70 Heavy Varmint .308 and a Rem 700 CDL 30.06.  My budget is $300 to $400 per scope but I don't know what to get.  I have heard good things and bad things about most of the scope manufaturers.  So I am asking those who are more familiar fro some additional suggestions.

Thanks

Jay

Check out the Bushnell 4200 Elite. Most likely your best bet under $400. We seem to have a lot of success with this particular model of scope. A very close runner up would be the Weaver Grand Slam.

Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x50....... $369.95

Weaver Grand Slam 3.5-10x50....... $299.95

You failed to mention your purpose. Target shooting, Hunter NRA, some scopes work better than others when the use becomes more specific.

i think my scope of choice for the heavy barrel would be a SS10X42, jsut becuase i like them, and i would get either a bushnell 4200, or look for a zeiss conquest 3-9x40 on the smaple list for the 30-06.

Thanks to everyone that replied.  It looks like I will be going with  the 4200 for my M1a (target), Conquest 4.5-14X44 for my model 70 (target & Hunting) and the conquest 3-9x40 for my Remington (hunting).

Great site, thanks for your help.

As Brady stated, I would go with the Elite 4200. I am not a big fan of 50mm objectives, but if you don't mind the added weight and higher mounting, than by all means go with the 50mm. I have several 2.5-10x40's which are available with the FireFly reticle. As far as I know, they don't offer the FireFly in the 50mm 4200.The FireFly reticle is a great low light asset and I've found the 40mm objective scopes to be plenty bright. The 50mm will be brighter at the very top end of the scopes power range. At 8-10 power is the only place where you could likely benefit with the 50mm.

P.S.  Great choice on the 700 CDL 30/06. That is one handsome rifle!
