Hi, I am new to your site.  I have no experience with any "high powered scopes".  Other then my my deer rifle with its 3x9 Leupold, I have no scope knowledge.  I bought a Leupold and bought a Larue mount for it and it is sitting on my ar 15 in .223.  I went out yesterday and sited it in at 200 yrds, but I am thinking about having a 100 yrd zero instead.  I can see the holes in the paper at 100 yrs where as, I cannot at 200.  I know Leupold says to have it set for a 200 yrd zero, but I don't think I will ever be able to hit any thing past 300 yrd anyways and then there is the wind factor.  I had a portable table set up and my sand bag(forgot my chair), so I was on my knees trying to zero in at 200 yrs with wind gusts at 20 mph.  With my heartbeat being clearly effecting my aim as probably my body moving with being on my knees, I don't think being zeroed at 200 is a good idea. I don't know anything about these type of scopes and I am wanting to use it for ground squirrels.  Is it possible to use the zoom on these scopes and still not change the point of aim with the cross hairs(If I am saying that correctly).  I read where someone said that these are only good for certain zoom level so once your set you can't zoom in or out, or it will mess up where the bullet hits, is what I was understanding him to say?  Thanks Robert

Any modern variable scope should maintain zero throughout the magnification range.  You can zero it at any range you would like.   200 yards is a commonly recommended zero yardage because the bullet will typically hit within three inches of your point of aim from 0 to about 250 yards or so.  This is referred to as maximum point blank range.

It sounds like you might be better served by a lower magnification scope for hunting ground squirrels.  It will be much easier to keep the crosshairs steady at lower magnification.  I would suggest something in the 3-9, 4-12, or maximum 4.5-14 range.

If the scope is well made( you don't say the make of the scope being zeroed) point of aim should remain constant though out the magnification range. If the scope is second focal plane and is of the BDC or mil-dot type reticle, the sub-tensions of the reticle will only be correct on a certain mag. And as far seeing the holes in paper at 200yards, maybe try shoot-n-see targets.
If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?
