I am looking for a new scope to mount on my Remington 280. In the past I have used Nikons (older model) and was pleased for he performance and value.
If you could offer suggestions I would appreciate it.
I would like to keep my price around $450 but would pay more for a real increase in performance.
Scope requirements
3x9x40-42
4x12x40-42
4x16x40-42
Thoughts are Nikon, bushnell, zeiss conquest, weaver (grand slam) I will be looking in the sample list also to see if something nice turns up.

Are you dead set on a max obj. of 42?
Either way I think the Bushnell Elite 4200 with the Rainguard would be my suggestion you can get them for what you wanting to spend and still have some left over.
if you were to go to the 50mm obj you could get a Elite 4200 with or without illuminated reticle for a little above your price range and it would be a 2.5-10 power

I am currently looking at the 4200 in 3x9x40. I dont think the added expense for the 2.5-10 would be worth the extra cost than the 3-9x40. I was looking at the 4-16x50 but dont really use my current scope(6-24) above 10 power anyways. So for 299(retail) you can get the bushnell elite 4200 in 3-9x40. I set that this is the route I'm going. Good luck!

A little while back I put together some scope recommendations in different price ranges. Perhaps you can find these useful:

I tell ya......since Zeiss dropped these back down......it's a heck of a deal IMO !
But the 4200 3-9x40 is a great scope for $299 and the rainguard is a nice feature !

Here are my choices after some advice but will wait a few more days to see what others say. (In no order)
1) Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 $399.95
2) SWFA SS 10x42 Tactical Riflescope $399.95
3) Nikon 3-12x42 Monarch Riflescope BDC $429.95
4) Nikon 4-16x42 Monarch Riflescope BDC $449.95
5) Bushnell 4-16x40 Elite 4200 Rifle $419.95
6) Bushnell 4-16x50 Elite 4200 Rifle $509.95
I never really used a 50 size reticle so is it really worth the extra money? I also did not care for the 3.3 inches of eye relief on bushnell 3x9 and 2.5x10 so that is why they are not included.

Would these be out of your price range - this would be my first choice with their tritium and fiber optic illumination.

One other scope that really appeals to me for a hunting rig is this one:
