which of these two scopes has the better glass? Does the IOR have a true zero stoop?

So...a few things:

1. IOR has always been known for among best-in-class glass, but there is much more to a scope than glass. If this is for a tactical rifle, glass is pretty low on my priority list if it is a budget constraint.

2. Turrets, reliability, and rock solid customer support all go to the SS, without question. IOR support ranges from decent to nonexistent, voice of experience. In comparison, SWFA always answers the phone and they back their scope as every scope company should.

3. Not sure on IOR zero stop. SS has a "kinda" zero stop solution, it isn't the most elegant of solutions, but it is effective.

On what is this scope going, and for what purpose? What ranges will you be shooting? Why a fixed 10X?

agree there is much more to a scope than glass. i know SWFA is reliable in their turrets and i know what i am getting with them. I have heard that IOR has reliable tracking on the top end scopes and heard a lot of praise on this fixed 10 for reliability but wanted to confirm with people first. I can find a lot of reviews on the SWFA but hardly anything on the IOR. So looking at glass comparison and both +/- reviews on the IOR for a custom remington 700 in 7 rem mag to long range shooting.

I have owned around 8ish IORs but not that one.  I have had two of the 2.5-10x models.  Glass was superb, the mp8 reticle is still my favorite.  Mine both tracked true and were reliable. They were good scopes.

I own and have owned many SS scopes including the 10x HD.  Glass wise the IOR may have them beat, but not by much if they do and only noticeable by the pickiest users.

I would pick the SS, the turrets are better and SWFA CS is excellent.  My 10x HD was used a lot and it always worked.  It went through 3 or 4 precision rifle classes on loan to my cousin on multiple rifles and I used in a PR class and used it on 3 or 4 different rifles and it was always dependable.

The 10x42 IOR has been around for a long time and is generally a robust design (stay away from their 10x56, though).

Optically, the IOR is a touch better than the SSHD 10x42, but it is close.

I prefer the turrets on the SSHD, though.  Better feel and probably more robust.

However, the IOR has turret covers, which a lot of people like.

Ultimately, in terms of use, the biggest difference comes from the parallax adjustment: SSHD has a rear PA adjustment, while the IOR has side-focus.

Personally, I use the SSHD with Mil-Quad reticle and like it a lot.  It sits on my LR-308 paired with a miniature red dot on a 45deg ring in a "poor man's" 1x/10x mount.

It works great and has been just about bulletproof in my experience.

Since rear parallax is ambidextrous, I hae learned to really appreciate it when I shoot left-handed.

ILya
