So Ive narrowed down to 2 choices on which scope i want.
This will be mainly for long distane shooting in a clear cut and long distace hunting. So what I'm asking is;g is it worth paying extra for the 35mm tube and that slight extra magnification range. And which knobs would be better, the normal ones or the exposed ones on the 14x.
Any other advice is welcome.
Btw, I have a heavy barrelled 308

I like the 18x mag but it probably won't be needed. The exposed knobs are definately a plus. The 35mm tube will give you more of an adjustment range but if you don't plan on shooting 1000+ I would go with the 14x and the exposed knobs.

THe 4-14x has 82 max MOA of adjustments the 3-18x has 70 max MOA of adjustment. With a 20 MOA base that should be good for 1200 yards with a .308, I can reach that with my 3-18x on a .308. They both have the same glass and coatings. The 3-18x has 15 MOA of adjustments per turn of the knobs. The 4-14x has 25 MOA on the elevation and I believe 9 on the windage. The 4-14x does not come with rings to plan on adding about $100 to that price with rings. The 3-18x is obviously more versital because of the lower low power and higher high, but for hunting that is not necessary and for 1000 yard shooting it is not necessary. They both have illumination and side focus. The 4-14x has bigger objective so it will give you a little better exit pupil, but the 35mm tube should provide for more room for bigger lenses inside which should give you better quality images and brightness.
The covered knobs may be better for hunting if you get your gun muddy or real dirty. I personally like the knobs on the 3-18x better and far as the clicks go, they don't seem as mushy to me. Not that the newer style knobs are bad at all, I just personally prefer the ones on the 3-18x. If you are okay with spending $200 more, I would get the 3-18x it just adds a couple more features that may not benefit you all the time, but I think you will end up liking. Especially for a hunting gun/target gun. Edited by supertool73 - January/14/2008 at 15:56 |

Both are nice, and either will work for your application just fine. Pick the one that is more intune with what you will be using the rifle for and you'll be good to go.

Thanks for the advice, Ill have to reevaluate my situation in terms of hardware and financially. That 3-18x is mighty tempting. It would probably make my balls grow having one. Anyhow, thanks once again. Btw Supertool, could you email me about the ghat youve got thats brings you to 1200 please? |
