I have very seriously been considering the Leica Duovid 8+12 x 42 Binos for the versitility. I have not been able to find info on the glass quality compared to Trinovids and Ultravids. I did have a guy at our local sporting goods store tell me they were basically variable power Ultravids.
I would like the 8X in cover, at closer distances, while on the move, and low light conditions when I would benefit from the larger exit pupil. Then use the 12X when glassing larger distances and really trying to pick thickets apart before going to the spotter. Let me know what you think, I have decided to break down and buy the best, I want Quality not just Novelty. |

Swoyer -
I did look through those Duovids earlier this year, and got the same story. For my eyes, however, I thought the Ultravid's were much better optically, particularly regarding brightness and edge sharpness. I think the Ultravids may be the best binos on the market today in terms of pure optics. Having said that, I went another direction because the ergonomics were no good for me.

You either get what you pay for or what you deserve.

Optically, the Duovid is equal to a Trinovid. Before you pull the trigger on a Duovid, make sure you can hold a 12x steady. Most folks have difficulty holding a 10x steady in my experience.
