What other scopes would be comparable to a Leica ER5 2-10-50 in optic quality and light transmission.

I have several Kahles CS models and think my Leica is comparable. They are top drawer and quite reasonable in cost.

ER5 is now discontinued, so I have not had a chance to look at all of the product line.  I have spent some time with the 2-10x50 and in terms of optical quality for something similar you should be looking at similarly priced Meopta products.

If you want something a little lighter, try Vortex Razor HD LH, which is probably my favourite hunting scope under $1k right now.  Optically it is right up there with anything in its price range and better than most.

does anyone know why the ER5's were discontinued?  Poor glass? Poor construction? some other issue?  They are still popping up for 500 bucks here and there, which seems like a great deal ..... but they were not discontinued for nothing - what was the catch?

They had a hard time maintaining the yields with the US manufacturer.  They moved manufacturing to Europe for a bit, but then they couldn't maintain the price point.  Leica has good QC, so the scopes that made it to the market seem quite good.

Since that's the case, I feel like I got a steal for what I paid.  This will be my second Leica in the past month ( I picked up the 8x50 Ultravid HD's off the sample list & they gave me a good deal with some trade ins) 

Is it true that the ER5 has "portugese glass" ?  I read this online somewhere when doing some quick research, and I'm not sure what to make of that statement.  Any other info on this scope would be great.

I am not sure where exactly the glass comes from. Leica has a factory in Portugal, so it might be from there.

I believe Leica still has presence in Portugal (camera and/or hunting solution). I had an old pair of Leitz binos (Leica) that were made there.
