Well I want to find a Leupold for my new Accura V1 and I want to go with a Leupold because the warranty, I like thier scopes and one of the range guys where I work gets them wholesale.  I have not seen his prices yet that he gets them for but it is suppose to be extremely good.  Went to Dick's today and looked at the ultimate slam and I felt that the circle plex was a bit cluttered, I'm sure they are great scopes I just did not like looking through it.  The circle plex appeared to me to be more obstructing.  Their dots beneath the duplex where nice and I like them more than the Nikon or Bushnell with the open circles beneath the duplex.  Looked through a Burris FF2 and it was nice but I want to stay with a Leupold for the price I will be able to get them at.  I am thinking along the lines of a VXII or jumping into a VX3 depnding on the price that I get but will probably go the VXII route in a 3x9x40 or a 3x9x50.  I would even go the VXII with a custom reticle from the custom shop due to it only costing approximately $30 bucks more.  I get the theory of the Ultimate slam with the corresponding dots but couldn't I just go with VXII and get M1 turrets installed to do the same thing.  I will be using the rifle from woods to field egdes where I will be able to shoot up to 200-250 yrds.  I'm also thinkin about just sighting in about 2" high at hundred and then it should be close around 150 yrds. I believe.  Most of my prior expierence with scopes has been little due to living in Ohio and only being able to use ML's and shotguns.  What are everyones thoughts or ideas?

You will have a good ten inches of drop between 100 and 200 yds with a muzzleloader.

You should consider these.  Like it or not the Nikon Muzzleloader scopes do kill deer I have one in a 3-9 that I have shot several deer with. There is a reason to select the 1.6-5x36 because 36 divided by 5 gives you a 7.2mm exit eye pupil so it will be bright in low light.
Similarly the FX3 6x42 will also give you a 7. mm exit eye pupil and be bright in low light. with a balistic reticle it only works for hold over at the maximum power of the scope.
Another route is to use a VX3 like the 4.5-14x40 above and dial in correction with its knobs which can be done because they have a little metal marker for you to reset to zero and once you work with the load and know how much correction to dial in for what distance it is an excellent solution.  One of my boys uses a Leupold VXIII 4.5-14x50 on his musket and he dials in correction and has shot deer well past 300 yds with it that way.  If you will be ordering from the custom shop you may wish to buy one with CDS knob and they will custom engrave it to your balistics once you know what to tell them which will take range work.   Muskets are not nearly as easy to get consistent as centerfire rifles it takes work and it takes knowing a few tricks. First and most important run a wet patch down the bore after every shot then a dry patch. Always put grease on the breach plug threads or your are done.

When your son dials in correction is it on a scope that has that capablility standard or did he get the custom M1 turret to go with his scope?

I just looked up the FX line and I see that they come with the CLicks standard.  Maybe I'm over thinking this since I will have a max shot of 200 yrds., probably could shoot loger but I would limit myself to around 200 yrds.

I just put a higher quality scope on my Knight. I went with a Vari-X-III 1.75-6 that was just sitting on a 308 I have not used lately. I've tried a few of the more busy reticles & like the regular duplex, especially for the M-L ranges. I sight in dead on at 75 yrds & position myself for that 50 +/- yrd shot.

I'm going to the range tomarrow to get certified with an AR, I will see what kind of deal on a 3x9x40 VII I can get. If it aint good enough I think I'm going to get a Vortex. The 3.5x10x50 Viper is a little more scope than I wanted but it is $239 and the 3x9x40 Viper is $299, both V-plex's. Might as well get the 50mm since its cheaper. The deal on the 2x7x32 is great but I want at least a 3x9x40, I've used both and I like the 3x9x40 or bigger alot better.

Talked to the range guy today and I can get the VII 3x9x40 for $248 plus taxes and shipping, $51 cheaper than list. I believe I might as well get the 3x10x50 Viper for $239. Opinions welcomed

Muzzleloaders have a wicked trajectory almost like throwing a rock.  Actually there is a lot to be said for using a mil dot reticle with a muzzleloader.
Rangefind distnace  18 inches brisket to backbone to determine distance

5 mils = 100 yds
5 mils  = 125yds
3 mils = 148 yds
2.5 mils = 200 yds
1.66 mils  = 300 yds
1.5 mils  = 333 yds
1.25 mils = 400 yds
1 mil = 500 yds
Using 120 grains Tripple Seven and a 250 gr Barnes Sabbot this balistic chart should hold true.
X  = 100 yds  ZERO
1 mil dot  down  = 200 yds
2 mil dots down = 250 yds
3 mil dots down = 300 yds

There is about a ten to twelve  inch drop at 200 yds with a musket zeroed at 100 yds.  You can zero dead on at 100 yds and hold six inches over the back bone and you will definately get vitals at 200 yds.

I went with the Leupold Ultimate Slam on 3 of my muzzleloaders, seem good.

I've had the same Nikon 30mm on one of my Knight's for several years and it's a great scope. I also have an older Swarovski 1.5 x 6  30mm on the other. I shoot about a hundred rounds per year in each gun, with  pretty heavy loads of BH 209 and have never had any problems with either scope. With all the money we spend on our hunts, equipment etc I'm a firm believer in buying the best possible scope you can afford. There is a reason the good ones cost more.

I put the VX3 1.75-6 on my smoke pole. No complaints on my end.
