For non-fiction, see if you can get your hands on anything by Paul Johnson, especially "Modern Times".  It is a very comprehensive and intelligent overview of the first four decades of the 20th century.

For Churchill lore and history in general, Martin Gilbert is worth reading.

I think I saw Ray Bradbury somewhere earlier in the thread.  Bradbury is hard for me to read for some reason.  I jsut do not like his style.  Roger Zelasny, on the other hand, is easily my favourite of sci-fi/fantasy classics.  I like practically all of his work, especially the mythology driven novels like "This Immortal", "Lord of Light", etc.

Well, the only Bradbury I read was Fahrenheit 451... I thought it was good because I had seen the movie ....and it WAS good.....( Bradbury actually said he liked the movie better than his book! )
