Still reading this. I read it during waiting times on the school bus. Freakin' fantastic. Also I have been to all those places along I-80 and in the oilfield.

I would like to take a Union Pacific train from Sacramento over the mountains and see all the sights.

After WAR AND PEACE I ordered this translation of ANNA KARENINA by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. I understand this husband and wife team are like the premiere Russian translators. My other copy of ANNA was translated by Rosemary Edmonds (1954)...

Welp, I started THE BIG ONE!    Shocked

I read "One Second After" by William R Forstchen yesterday.  I recommend it for anyone interested in learning about the real dangers we face.  He has researched well and has produced a work that should be read and understood by every American, Canadian, Brit, Australian... every member of the "free world".  It is terrifying, saddening to the point of despair, touches the heart and soul of anyone who is "human".  It describes the end of the world as we know it due to EMP... the most devastating weapon on earth that is realistically in the arsenal of most third world scumbags.
As the saying goes..."read it and weep".
Prepare... it really COULD happen and "One Second After" describes the horror that would be real if it did happen. Fear the Reaper...

Dan, years ago I watched a TV series called Revolution that paralleled the direction One Second After is going. The book may have been the inspiration for the series, not sure about that, but it was a chilling glimpse into an apocalyptic future. Have started reading the book.

This was the intro into the TV series:

We lived in an electric world. We relied on it for everything. And then the power went out. Everything stopped working. We weren't prepared. Fear and confusion led to panic. The lucky ones made it out of the cities. The government collapsed. Militias took over, controlling the food supply and stocking up on weapons. We still don't know why the power went out. But we're hoping someone will come and light the way.”

I'm about to start "The Last Day".  "One Year After" was really depressing in many aspects... especially if reading with the TV on Fox News and hearing news that played right in with the book's themes.

Because these books hit so close to home, reading is a real emotional rollercoaster.  My wife read the first one (has not yet started the second because she said she needed some time to fully recover)... she said to me "no questions will be asked by me, no resistance at all... do whatever you need to do to make sure we are prepared... get us ready"

And so it begins...

These books are engrossing but not an easy read, kind of like passing a terrible car accident and not being able not to look.

I have seen more than a few apocalyptic movies over the years, On the Beach, Fail Safe, The Bedford Incident, among others, that caused restless nights. Not sure why I continue to watch them but I do seem drawn to them.

The MAD doctrine has served us as a nuclear deterrent to this point but not sure how it will play out going forward: we have a desperate delusion leader in Russia, a deranged leader in North Korea, and a cold calculating leader in China whose continued development of hypersonic nuclear capable missiles seems intended to improve the odds of a decapitating first strike. Too many lit matches around a can of gas to suit me.

At my age my worries are now focused to what kind of world my grandchildren will inherit. I pray it will be a big improvement over what we seem to be formulating today.

I have to stop reading and watching this stuff!

p.s. I think I’ll just go open that bottle of Drambuie I’ve been saving

Finished "The Final Day" last night and ordered "Five Years After" (which is due out in August of this year).  Also, though based upon the advent of a solar Extinction Level Event, I like Forstchen's style, I ordered and am about to read "48 Hours".  Looks like fun...
