Just bought a ar-15 .223/5.56 . Anyone have any ideas what size scope I should get . I like practice shooting at close range and enjoy long range shots . I was thinking of getting 2 scopes (1 longrange & 1 closerange tactical ) and mounting one above the other . Dont know if its possible or how that would work out . Was thinking of a Barska 3-12x40 and a shorter scope 1x30 mounted on top.
Any ideas or recommends ?

Welcome to the forum.
First off, what is your budget. 2nd, Barska's are pure crap, so don't bother with them. 3rd is this just going to be a range gun? For competitions? For hunting? Home defense? |

Welcome... My suggestion would be to only use one scope.
They make scopes with ranges from 4-5 to 14-20 that well suit the common shooters needs.
Some say a 3-9 is all that is needed.
I prefer a fixed 4x on an AR platform with reticle to 6 or 8...
I would look at the 4-14or16.
A good quality scope is what you should look for if you cannot afford it use your irons and improve your technique
having proper breathing and trigger control while saving up for a better scope is the only suggestion I can make that will improve your success .
Might I also suggest getting a scope without the bells and whistles.
Dare I also suggest you read a few posts here one called scope basics and the other called long range shooting. Both are excellent reads that will assist you to finding a scope and a reticle that fits your needs or Wants.
Why I suggest not getting all the bells and whistles is because I have found many gun show tables and big chain stores full of red-green illuminated high magnification large objective scopes that look Ubber Cool that probably wouldn't make a good paperweight...

A 3-9x or a 2-7x would probably be my choice as well.
I would just get a hunting type scope. Bushnell Elite, Vortex Viper, Leupold VX3, Sightron S2 Big Sky, Ziess Conquest. And then put it in this mount. http://swfa.com/Burris-AR-PEPR-1-Scope-Mount-P12624.aspx Edited by supertool73 - June/17/2011 at 11:28 |

Absolutely - SS 3x9 with QD mount. For the close stuff, throw on a set of flip up BUIS. All your bases are covered. Later on if you have the whim to do it, add a QD red dot if that strikes your fancy.
Honestly, I primarily use just the SS 3x9. Sometimes just for kicks us my iron sights. Have the EoTech and will probably keep it, but I would forego it if I had it to do all over. It's nice to have the option of just quickly changing from scope to red dot, but I'd say it's a rather expensive option to have around for the little use it actually sees.
Look here and go with kit # 6

You wont go wrong with the Super Sniper line.
another good choice is Trijicon there is a 1-4 on samplelist used at a good price and the scope I like is the compact ACOG which comes in 1.5x or 2x or 3x but has really great illumination and is compact and ideal for an AR.

I would get the 3-9 in the group buy. I put the SS1-4 on my AR and love it. I also have the 3-9 on my 270 and it is a great scope. You won't regret the extra to get the SS
