Finally got a Rifle which needs a Scope..!

This is all new to me, and while I have fired Rifles with Iron Sights, and Hand Guns, I have not fired anything with a Scope before.

Rifle is apparently a late 1950s or early 1960s ( I think ) Heavy Barrel, chambering the .22 - 250 Cartridge.

Barrel by "C. H. Morse", Receiver by Mauser, date 1944 with Waffenamt, Stock, probably by Morse also I would guess

Being all new to this, I just wanted to ask your-all opinion, on whether an old Lyman, "Super Target" 20 X Scope, would be an appropriate choice for this Rifle.

I intend to shoot it fairly often, and to learn about general Bench Rest Shooting with it...and to begin loading for it come late March or so.

Barrel is 27 - 1/2 inches from Muzzle to where it meets the Receiver.

Scope Mount Holes are located 1st pair,  just a little in front of the end of the receiver, and, 2nd pair, starting about 8 inches out.

I'd post an image of the Rifle if I could but I do not have an HTTP for the image, so not sure how to post here yet.

Hmmmm sounds like a rifle designed for old school long range.... 27.5" barrel!!!
While a 20X fixed should work fine for anything beyond 75 yards I'd recommend an
variable zoom scope to start with.  A 3-9X of quality would be a good first choice.

Of coarse the optics glass quality will be the deciding factor cost wise....

Check out the samplelist for quality used optics: https://samplelist.com/

Thank you budperm!

Since the Rifle dates to the late '50s or early '60s ( so far as I gather, anyway ) I just would not feel right outfitting it with a scope which is not from that same time frame.

Whatever Scope I get, if I am not happy, I can put it on something else, ( I have a few other old rifles I have gotten over the last year or so, which are drilled and tapped for Scopes, even though they are not per-se Bench Rest Rifles, they are capable of long range Shooting ) or re sell it, and, keep searching, so...should be fun and interesting, no matter ( unless I spend a big wad on a bad scope, so I will try and be careful! ).

I will go have a look at "samplelist", and report back soon.

Well, the old Lyman is certainly a period-correct scope.....but it's 55 years old now.....

Scope technology has progressed so much in the last 20 years I am a bit dumbfounded he wants a "period correct" scope.  If you expect to get the quality scope your talking about thats "period correct" then your going to need deeper pockets I fear.

As long as you stay away from the current SWAT/Military stle scopes there are plenty that wouldn't look bad on that rifle at all...

Good luck with your hunt! Cool

Image of the Rifle itself, and of the Scope Base mounting locations -

Scope Base Mounting Holes are on the Barrel, and not on the Receiver.

Can you suggest some Scopes for me to consider?

"Deeper Pockets" than what a high condition Lyman 'SuperTarget' 20 X would tend to sell for?

Should I be looking for a 1950s/1960s "Urnertl" instead?

I have looked to Leupold Scopes on ebay and Gunbroker...but, they all seem to be very short length, intended to be mounted to a Receiver.

Which Models does or did Leopold offer in the 1950s, early 1960s, which were for Target Rifles, and which mount on the Barrel, rather than on to the Receiver?

Been thinking I ought to get a Unertl, and, give both it and the old Lyman a try, and see which I like best.

A favorable deal happened to come up for the Lyman, so I thought, why not?

May be I would prefer the Unertl...but, no way to know unless I try it, so, I'll figure on keeping an eye peeled for one, and, go for the Gusto soon as one happens to have my name on it..!

So...what is the difference between a "Varmint Scope" and a "Target Scope"?

Or, is there any difference?

The Lyman Super Target Spot is an excellent scope. The rifle is drilled and tapped for a target scope. Make sure the recoil spring is adjusted for the rifle.  Most of those target scopes are external adjustment; Lyman Target Spot, Unertl, and Feckers. A Redfield 3200 which has internal adjustment and will also fit on the rifle's hole pattern. Those scopes are all great but they are just getting so crazy expensive. Good luck with your rifle.
