So I'm thinking of a new rifle in .308 Win. What is your guys' choice between these two scopes? Why? Anything other than brand loyalty? If not one of this what would you buy for around 1000.00? Thanks guys! http://swfa.com/Zeiss-5-25x50-Conquest-HD5-Rifle-Scope-P60845.aspx

Either would be a good choice, but I would lean towards the Meostar. I've owned both and the Meostar has better optical quality than the HD-5. My Meostar R1 rivaled the optical picture of my Z3. Another one you should consider is the Leica ER line. Not sure if you need that high end magnification (long range?) but I've used my Leica ER 2.5-10x out to 600 yards hitting a steel antelope with boring regularity. |

Yeah, my bros and I like to try to hit prairie dogs out there at extended ranges so I would like something that could give me a little more zoom on the critters. I currently have the Viper PST and I know compared the the conquest hd5 it lacks in optical quality so it sounds like the meostar would be quite the upgrade.
Any other scopes people love around 1000.00? Sightron? |

I used to emphasize the high end magnification on my scopes until I picked up a SWFA 5-20x. Even with my Leica ER at 10X, the sight picture on it is better than what I had on my Zeiss Conquest at 16x.
Might want to consider the Leica ER 3.5-14x or even the SWFA 3-15X. Latter doesn't have the HD glass like the SWFA 5-20X, but still a great scope for less than $700 and the Leica can be had within your budget. If you are patient, a used SWFA 5-20X (non-illuminated) often pops up for around $1K. You would be set up very nicely for taking on prairie dogs.

To me, that particular Meopta has great optics, but is really long and heavy. I'd rather have a side focus than adjustable objective personally. I believe a real sleeper is the VX6 with CDS. 20moa per turn of the dial, great glass.

I would be really interested in the 5-20 ss except that I believe they only come in milradions. I just havent ever even dealt with a scope like that so I would be starting over from square one. I know all the formulas for MOA in my head for angles and ranging etc. Thats the only hang up if Swfa would make one that would be awesome
Havent even thought of the leupy vx6. How would that compare to say a mark 4 optically or the meopta or hd5? |

I've had my VX6 side by side with an HD5 briefly and my 53 yr old eyes can't tell the difference optically, but the VX6 is easier to get behind at higher mags than the HD5 was to me. I am sure enough a big fan of the Meopta stuff though. They have a great thing going on here in the US.

Agree with JGR. VX-6 glass is darn close to Leica quality and very good option if you want illumination. LR Duplex reticle is excellent and you can get a free CDS turret for your pet load on the 308.
