I posted a thread in the base/rings forum but am not getting any feedback at all. I just acquired a very nice Sako Forester L579. It's a varmint barreled .243. It came with bases and rings already installed. I'm going to use my Elite 4200 6-24x on it. The problem is that the rear mount isn't right. It sticks WAY out over the ejection port.
I'm trying to figure out what mounts to use. I've found several options but don't have much knowledge about bases. Here's what I've found if you could help point me in the right direction.

you have a longer mt. for standard sako, redfield and burriis make a shorter one if you want to stay with the same rings, leos sako mt works well or if you want to go to warne i'd up load a picture but the picture browser doesn't work since the new forum format.

Are these inferior in strength to a base/ring setup?

no, they work well- and better than traditional lock in -- windage adj. redfield types.

I don't see any sort of recoil lug on them. What keeps the rifle from sliding out from under them upon firing? Is the dovetail tapered on a Sako receiver or am I missing something else?
edited to add: Nevermind. (Duh. It says "tapered" right in the description.) I guess I've never encountered one up close.... Edited by RONK - December/03/2007 at 20:05 |

also the ones blsnelling is using have a small set screw that will tension against the receiver for additional resistence.

Try standard Lynx bases + rings for a Sako dovetail. They are strong, do not hang over the ejection port and will give good service. Edited by 8shots - December/04/2007 at 01:57 |

Yes, the Sako dovetails are tapered. I've noticed that not all the bases have a set screw like mine. What holds them in place?

Rear recoil. Try getting them off a rifle that has been used a bit! You need a wooden block and mallet.

I ordered the Redfield Mounts from SWFA and received them yesterday. They fit nicely. I used the rings I had and they fit tightly to the new bases. I'm GTG for only $25! Now to bore sight this thing and get her dialed in. I called Sako in Finland and my rifle is from '63-'64, yet it looks almost new. I'd like to put a nicely finished Curly Maple stock on her now.
