Yea I can definitely agree that they're effective(yours is the best I've heard of though!),but are they desirable for hunting?

i know i made the mistake once of using my 300 with the boss without ear plugs, i ordered a  boss cr the next day.

i agree john, my dad was shooting my 300 off the bench one day and i was standing at 90 degrees and the concussion was terrible, and the dust flew all over the place.

It's on my go to hunting rifle and I have not used muffs while hunting yet and have not noticed ringing ears after a shot.I will say 90% I do have my ipod ear thingies in. there not  a muff or anykind of protection but i'm sure it cuts down on the blast a little. I did blow bark from a pine tree all over the place with one shot from the side blast.

I thought I had better pic's of it. i'm going to build a .338 rum and going to put another onr on it. I like them.

What's a Boss CR?  If it eliminates the Boss my friend wouldn't handle the recoil. He's got a Mod 70 FWT w/laminate stock in .270 Win that he shoots VERY well, and that's his limit, but he hangs with guys where he lives who tell him he needs MORE. He keeps buying rifles he don't like to shoot!

OK Bd, I've seen pics of those.  I've just never been around muzzle breaks but once.  FINE rifle by the way!

i didnt notice much difference in recoil after i put the boss cr on.

Boss CR= the ability to use the tuning function of the boss without the muzzle brake effects, hence no increase in noise level.

yes, you can probably order them from browning, or type in boss cr into yahoo or google and find a place that sells them, they normally cost $30

 Hey Bd,THANKS for the offer!

pyro,I did a quick search and it seems the CR is cartidge specific? Did find one for a .338 Win Mag for $21. Gonna share the info with my friend and see if he's interested.

the cr is sorta specific you could say, like the .338 is by itself, but like the 223 22-250 and .243 would work on those guns, then they have like a .264 270 25-06 then all the 7mm's can use the same one, and all the .30cals use another one

The CR IS cartridge specific... you basically remove the muzzle brake portion of the BOSS and replace with a crowned end.  Not caliber interchangeable, same size bullets work.

browning isnt replaceing the abolt with the x bolt, they are two different rifles, and they will continue to make the abolt, as far as i know, and they still put the boss on the abolt

had a boss on a varmit heavy 308 browning, hardly see any difference with handloads, but the good part was military surplus, after finding the number with portuguese,sa, ofv, bulgarian, lc, it was possible to go back and forth between lots and still get about 1 moa groups.
usually a shooting mat with a blast shield in the front works very well, especially the 300 win trg,
anyone who shoots or used to shoot imhsa will remeber the mud flaps we used to drape over the knee from the creedmore position to block the blast from the cyclinder gap in revolver class.

For now.  I do believe that's eventually their plan, though.

i could swear i read an article in rifleshooter some time that said they planned to continue making both rifles, because they were different enough to justify it, i could be mistaken i will have to see if i can find that article some where in my stack.

i found it!! jan/feb09 rifleshooter, article is by layne simpson, he did a test and review of the xbolt, and near the end of the article he says that from what he has been told browning has no plans in the near future to cease production of the abolt. Layne also goes on to say he agrees with that choice, since both rifles are different enough and offer certain things that certain people want or dont want in one model of the other.
