Hello all, I need some advice. I'm not incredibly versed in the ways of picking out good optics, so I figured I could come here for some advice. That being said I am a very experienced shooter, and can hold tight groupings at long range.
I inherited a rifle from my grandfather, a winchester model 70 that shoots a 30-06. While the rifle is in gorgeous condition, the scope hasn't weathered the test of time as well. The scope it has on it currently will not hold a zero, I attribute this to about 50 years of mishandling by relatives that aren't well versed in the way of firearms, and didn't particularly know that scopes are fragile. I have taken the rifle shooting several times since it has come to my hands, and have not been impressed with the bad groupings that I get using the scope. For a bit I was afraid it was my fault that my groupings were so horrible, to test this I asked a friend if I could borrow his rifle, and my groupings were tight with his rifle. So by process of elimination I have come to the conclusion that the scope itself is not functioning properly. Anyway, onto the meat and bones. I am looking to replace the scope, and I would like some advice from people who have far better knowledge on this topic than I. I primarily plan on using this rifle as a target rifle. I like shooting at ranges that are between 500 and 800 yards, but I find that it is difficult to accommodate that sort of range in most places. Usually I find myself firing at targets that are around 200-300 yards away. I am currently on a limited budget, and would like to spend less than $350 usd on a scope, but I would like a good quality scope for this rifle. TL:DR I'm looking for a good quality scope that is less than $350 for a winchester model 70 30-06 that will be mostly used for shooting at targets that are usually 200-300 yards, but could range as far as 800 yards. Thanks for your advice, Erin.

This. For the price you can not get a better scope. Clear glass, rock solid turrets that match a bitchin' reticle! And if 10x isn't enough for you, they also sell 12x, 16x, and 20x for the same price.

For target use I would go with the 16x42 Super Sniper from SWFA.com
