Hello,

I am new to this forum and was hoping some of you could give me a little help. I am looking to purschase a new scope for a 10/22 that i just built. I was at cabelas the other day checking out a leupold vx 1 3x9x50 scope and the guy behind the counter told me that i should not put anything bigger than a 40 mm objective on a 10 22, and i was not sure why. I liked the 4x12x40 but thought the 50 mm would suite me better in low light as i will be using this for squirell hunting. Also if there is any other kind of scope that i should look at in the 300 dollar price range for this gun i would greatly appreciate the sugestions.

Thanks
Jon

Thank you very much 300S&W. I looked at a few of these and thought about it but have never heard too much about them. do you have one and what are your expierances with it. i have been leaning more and more towards a 40 mm objective due to not wanting to have the scope bulky or over powering the rifle. Thank you for your opinion and let me know about some of your expierances with the scope

Thanks Again
Jon

Welcome to the OT, Jon!

The 4200 is a nice scope.  I had that very scope on my 270 for a while.  Help up great.  Good glass.  The eye relief is a short, but not a problem at all.  Especially for a 22.

Another scope you might look at is the Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40.  To me the glass looks about the same.  The Burris feels more durable (and mine has taken a beating with zero problems).  I also like the ball-plex reticle of the FFII better.

Either scope will be great.

Another scope to throw out is the Nikon Team Primos.  Probably better optics that either of the scopes above.  Although I don't have much experience with the Nikon.

  Hey Jon,
I don't have the 4200 myself but have friends who do. Some by my recommendation.  All like it alot.  As Helo said, the eye relief is kinda short but one guy on here had/has one on a .375H+H and hasn't been bit.  Again as Helo said, the FFII's are NICE scopes although I liked  the 4200 better.  This is where each individual's eyes can give different results.  I haven't looked through the Primos scope yet but have read positive replies on it. I will say that out of the two I've looked through(FFII and 4200),I liked the images of both better than the  VX-I.

Often, guys working behind sporting goods counters are not scope experts.  Now I happen to like small objective lens scopes on my .22 LR but mine is not a specially built 10-22 where the highest accuracy criteria may be desired.  I have a 2-7x28 VX-2, Rimfire-Leupold on a Model 63 Winchester.  This rifle is smaller than any of my centerfire rifles and this scopes matches the rifle size well.

I seldom shoot at targets more than 50 yards away with this rifle and use it mainly to kill pests where the low magification is handy at about 20-25 yards or so.  Optically, this scope meets my needs and has a large enough exit pupil to work well at dusk.  Your needs may be different.
