I am looking for small harsh condition binoculars that can be left in the car, stand up to high temperatures and vibration and still hold up. I have tried several of the very low end wally world brands that always give double vision after a few months, something in the 8X20 size preferred. The Steiner predators on the sample list seem near in size but I am unsure of there durability. Any other suggestions will be considered.

http://www.swfa.com/pc-8732-646-nikon-8x42-monarch-atb-binocular.aspx First off, I don't own any binoculars. A buddy of mine has had one like this in his truck for a while now. He uses them to look around on his job sites. He has dropped them in mud, concrete, and just about any other abuse one can think of and they are still working great. Very good glass for the money’s think so anyways. |

These will be to big. I am looking for something to keep behind the seat. I plan on getting some Vortex Razors soon but I need something small to spot house numbers or whatever. The Nikon I have are much to large. I have had some of the Tasco and Bushnell 8X20 that do not stay in alignment after being exposed to the temps of a hot car. I am looking for more than the $20 range but yet not over $250. They just need to be tough. There are Steiner on the sample list for $89 but I do not know if they are tough and can take the heat.

small, strong, and designed for what you describe: Fujinon 7x28, military issue. Good luck finding one. Pretty much anything under $100 will have cheesy optics, will not survive in the vehicle, or both.

These might work. I have a 10x monocular from IOR and the optics are very good. http://www.swfa.com/pc-10261-1209-ior-8x21-bga-binocular.aspx

10x in a small compact binocular is difficult to hold steady, small binos are more difficult to hold steady. I would not go over 7x or 8x in such a tiny package.

Do a Google search for Weems & Plath M-24 7x28 Apache military binoculars. I have never used or seen one. I do however, have a nephew in Army Special forces, who's about to go to Iraq for the third time. He told me that he generally does not like army issue glass with the exception of the M-24. He likes these because they are tough as nails and are easy to carry and grab for a quick look from wherever they are needed. They use a different glass when the team is in place. These are ostensibly the same as the M-24 glass my nephew likes so well. They have a funky range finding reticle that is allegedly optional. I can make no personal recommendation, but you might give these a look. They have the same external design as the 7x28 Fujinon anweis posted earlier. Do a little checking, while most sites list these at $337.50, at least one has them for $280. They all say the reticle is optional, but give no apparent way to place an order for one without the reticle.

How about the Pentax 9x28 DCF. Great Binoculars for $250.

To Chris F II the Pentax look much stronger than the binoculars I have had . The ones I have had were cheaper versions but with similar hinge systems to the IOR. I believe that any Binoculars that have over 30 MM will be to large to fit in the map pouch behind the seat. How is the Warranty response with the Pentax just in case the heat gets to the adhesives or seals?
I have been looking at the Bushnell Legend for $79 with rainguard. These qualify for the free waterproof jacket I think. That would make them a very good value if they can take the harsh conditions.
