Hello everyone. My nephew needs a new scope for his new Winchester model 70 featherweight in .243 that I just purchased for him. He was a little over whelmed after looking at all the items in the store. So, I emailed Ilya Koshkin, and I explained the situation. Nephew wants his first hunting rifle. Liked shooting a friends .243. Likes duplex or cross hair reticles. Koshkin recommended Meopta MeoPro 3-9x40. Now he is looking at Leica ER5 2-10x50, Leupold VX-6HD and Vortex Razor HD LH 2-10x40. Talley ring and bases of course. If he still can't find a scope I am going to give him my Leica ERi, and tell him happy hunting. Need anything else tell your mother. It is hard because he lives out of state from me. Does anyone have the new Leupold HDs or Razor LHs? Thanks as always. Charles

Ilya has a good point, however I'm partial to  Swarovski 3-10X42 Z3 (Plex) .

My first thought is concern that his adventures may damage a scope.... which screams Vortex  no fault Warranty, My second thought is boy is it nice to have a scope that starts at 2x  rather than 3x for its wider field of view and rapid target acquisition.
My personal bias is toward illuminated Trijicon Accupoints but not everyone needs illumination or likes them as much as I do, and oddly enough I like the red post.
Nobody knows the glass like Ilya does so his suggestions are very solid.
Form follows  Function -  so specific styles of use dictate what works best in a specific type of use or type of hunting condition.

I had one of the Redfield 2-7 scopes out on the range last week and really enjoyed it.  http://swfa.com/redfield-2-7x33-revolution-rifle-scope-1.html?___SID=U

I like the duplex reticle choice personally, therefore I'd go with the 2-12x42 VX6.  It is the most user friendly variable scope made by anyone, anywhere, and has the best reticle.   It will get you way past legal shooting light, and Leupold's reputation for taking care of it's customers is second to none.

Skylar,
Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't even consider the Swarovski Z3 plex.

Urimaginaryfrnd,
You brought up two good points.
1) He is young and might be a little careless.
2) A lower magnification scope might be better.
However, I did tell my nephew to get what you like. It will be your scope and your decision. Maybe the Vortex or a discontinued Leupold VX-6 2-12x42 might be the answer.

Give him your ERi and you get another one.

Peddler,
There is one small problem. Leica discontinued the ERi. It has been replaced by the Visus model. Also, nobody near me has one in stock. I was told that the ER5 is a good seller.
