Well I think I have decided to get a new barrel for my WSSM. It is a winchester with a varmint barrel on it. It has a 1-10" twist rate, it shoots the 55 grain Vmax bullets great, but I really want to shoot heavier bullets. I hate how much the wind affects them.
I am pretty set on a Lilja 3 groove barrel, I put one of his on my .308 and it is crazy how good it shoots. My problem is deciding what twist rate to get. I cannot decide between 7 or 8" twist. The Lilja website says 8" is good for up to 80 grain bullets. I want to shoot either Hornady 75 grain Amax or their 75 grain BTHP. I use the 75 bthp in my AR with a White Oak 1-7" twist and it shoots them crazy good. But the Lilja site says a 7" is best for 85 and 90 grain bullets. This is probably stupid to even worry about, but I just cannot decide. What do some of you guys think? I will be able to run that around 3300 fps so it should be an awesome 1000 yards shooter. Only about 6 mils of drop at that distance. Edited by supertool73 - June/30/2011 at 11:01 |

Setting it up to run the same bullest as your AR would be nice when you could buy bullets in bulk for both. Then again I've never had an issue shooting a lighter bullet in a faster twist either. IE- you could get the 7 twist and shoot the 75 fine but you'd also be able to up it if you wanted. |

also have 233 wssm, got it hoping the 1/10would stabalize heavier bullets, but no luck. The barrel is pretty much gone even with chrome liningFN used to get the same barrel life as a 22-250, but don't have a desire to work with it. A faster twist would have gone sooner. Have you considered a fast 6mm? While the drop makes it look attractive the windage drift is the important thing, and while the heavier .224 bullets look attractive comparied to their compadres, they aren't that great in the 1000 yd crowd.
