ok, just picked on a sweet little FNH PBR 16" .308  looking to put on a nice optic, I'd like a variable in the range of a 1.5-8x decissions decissions....

I have a Rem 700 LTR with a Leupold LR/T 3.5-10 but for this lil FN I think a 1.5x8 or a 1.5x6 would be about perfect.  The LTR is a tack driver and looking forward to seeing what the PBR will do.  While I do like longer barrels on .308/7.62mm rifles I am a big fan of these shorties too.  I got a M1A SuperMatch for longer ranges and it, well goes without saying these are mighty fine units.

Once you answer koshkin's question, repsonses will pour in.  Without that info, not much can be said.

This is a self canceling question I think everyone elses 1.5 only goes to 6 so for other suggestions tell us how you will use it if it's not up close and personal you dont need to go down to 1.5 and if you dont need to get out past 200 yds you probably dont need more than 6x or if most of your shooting is 100 to 600 you probably need higher on the top end.

How about a fixed 6x42  for a lot less

604230 IOR 6x42 Tactical 30mm Rifle Scope IOR 6x42 Tactical 30mm Rifle Scope

Another direction you might want to go if it is for Police use is an Aimpoint Comp M4, I just bought one and it is awesome.

Well its a short barreled tactical rifle designed for a police patrol car, great idea much better than issueing M4 type .223 guns to a bunch of guys who spray and pray.  For years law enforcement has needed to supplement the range of the sidearms that are issued. Most of the officers I have worked with over the years cant shoot a pistol very well past 15 yds and shotguns pattern poorly at 50 yds and out so a rifle is a very logical choice. to be practical the gun needs to be short and be able to be turned around inside the front seat of a police car to engage targets from either side.  The bolt action .308 with a short barrel is an idea whose time has come for law enforcement - you can engage a hostage situation out to at least 200 yds with good results. I have a Savage 10FP  20 inch barrel with a 10x Super Sniper and it is one of my favorite guns. I can really see a use for a 16 in gun with and aimpoint on it to engage targets from 25 yds to 200

I'm always a big fan of paying a bit more for high quality glass.  I've tried cheaper and sometimes not so cheap scopes in the past and many have left me wanting.  I ended up topping this rifle off with a IOR 1.5-8x CQB, while not a 'perfect' fit for a .308 close enough for my needs, if I don't like it I can toss it on my Sig 556.  But after shooting it today I think it's a nice choice so far.  Once shighted in after a few shots I ended up with nice groups @ 200 yds.  Taking my time and doing my part it was doing 3/4" @ 200 yards with that God-awful "lawyer" trigger.
