I am buying a Savage 243, it will be used for coyote  and deer hunting.

A Vortex Viper HS 4-16x50 vith a v-plex reticle is going on the rifle.
 
I am fairly new to hunting, therefore any pointers would be appreciated!

BTW Summer, if you really wanna be prepared for hunting I'd say the biggest recommendation I can give you is spend time at the range with your gun first and know it.

 I went hunting this past season and did a lot better than I thought I would as far as being patient.

Unfortunatley due to my lack of practice before I couldn't get a shot I felt comfortable with Sad
 
There are many places in mind I plan on practicing both on range and in open area.

Get a .22 as alike as you can to your .243 and a shot timmer.  Then try and keep as many spiners going over distances from 25 yard to 200.    That will help you shoot on demand and get to know the various ranges.  Getting to know the ranges helps a lot in shooting on demand.

Learn the 10 basic rules of safe gun handling.
Learn to shoot from different positions: offhand, kneeling low and high, sitting, and prone. Offhand is the most difficult and should be practiced most, as it developes skill and confidence the fastest.
I'm not an expert. I'm not even a current pert, but I am a prepert.

I've thought about getting a .22 as well, just for small varmint hunting. Maybe that will be my next small investment...

 

 

I've been taught a lot as how to safely handle firearms and stay open minded about it as well.

My cousin once shot a hole in the floorboard of his truck because he didn't have his gun on safety he hit a small bump and something triggered it!

With that being said you can only imagine on how much he stresses safety now days.

 

I may do some shooting this weekend; I will definitely try some different shooting positions to get more familiar with different scenarios.

A .22rf will quickly pay for itself.  While reloading can cut cost and improve your ablity to tailor your load to your rifles taste...  The whole Time vs Money vs Volume thing favors the .22.  By the time you crank out a thousand rounds or more for the .243, you will have payed for a .22.  
 
They is four Rules: 
 
One: The gun is always loaded.
 
Two: Keep your bugger hook off of the trigger until your sights are aligned on the target.
 
Three:  Never point the gun at anything you are not willing to destroy!
 
Four:  Be sure of your target and understand what is behind it.
 
Understand this with firearms if you screw up then odds are that somebody close to you will be seriousl hurt and maybe die.  The odds are best that, that person is YOU.
  
See if there is an Appleseed class in your area!  Get as much training as you can as quick as you can.  It saves you money on bad habits.

Seriously, I'm impressed with what I'm hearing.  You have your eyes open keep them that way and play sponge.  I too recommend a 22.  Cheapest way to learn good form.  and as Hunter said....Practice, Pratice, Practice  (thats actually the fun part) !  Good Luck!

Come hunt Montana!!  I have a nice spot to hunt prairie dogs.  Plenty of practice.  I'll give you lots of pointers.  There are lots of deer, coyotes, and then when you are practiced up, elk and wolf.

Practice with your scope on all mag ranges and all distances.  That way you are ready for an unexpected shot no matter what the setting is.

Practice in good and bad weather.  Practice after getting winded as well.  This will help for hunts that you may do high altitude hunting.  Get used to your breathing pattern and heartbeat, learning your natural rhythm and when to squeeze the trigger.

Practice bringing the gun up.  Helps with the fast shots.

It is nice to never have to take a moving shot, but if you ever think you may have to, if you have a spot to practice with moving targets, this will help.

I plan on buying a .22 from Skylar to use for practice and to improve my ability; However that is after I get the .243 set-up and ready to go, it was priced fairly reasonable so i couldn't pass it up!
 
I still need to check into an "Appleseed" class, never hurts to know more about safety... Especially when dealing with firearms right? Don't want to anyone to get hurt nor myself. 
 
Helo-
As far as moving shots,  I think I should practice just for future chances. I also plan on practicing in different types of weather, you never know what mother nature brings.
Never been to Montana, would love to come if Chris would be willing to give me some extra vacation time ;)
 
Also skylar wanted me to inform you I will be there when you come down to shot with some of the other guys.
