Hi Guys,
Been a long time since I purchased a new scope and could use a little help. Here's the details.
Gun:Sako AV 300 Weatherby Magnum. With recoil brake. About a 8.5/9 pound gun without scope.
Hunting :75% usage,100yds to 400yds. Would like to work up to around 500yds. Mostly stand hunting, with a rare trip out west. Not allot of carry involved.
Paper killing: 25% usage,Would like to stretch it out to 600-700yds. Not a target shooter, just practice for hunting and fun. Longer practice shots so I can be OK with a longer hunting shot.
Price range: I would like to keep it around or under $600. Most likely to buy used or "sample list" to step up in quality of the scope.
The little research I did, pointed me to the Zeiss Rapid Z line, and the Leupold VX3 long range line. With power in the 4.5x14x50 range. In fact a friend has a Leupold (#66490) 4.5x14x50 long range with the boone&crockett reticle for sale at $600, scope looks new no ring marks. Is this a good price?
Also Zeiss seems to have a very good following, what model (z600,800,1000) would be a good choice?
Any help would be great. Also if you have a used choice for me would you mind giving me a "best guess" on a fair price for your recommended used scope.
Thanks in advance

One more thing, I shoot allot of hogs. And most of the time it's at daybreak and dark thirty. So a scope that does well in low light helps allot.

For a heavy-recoil gun, I'd recommend a 30mm scope.
That said, I had a 7-pound 300Win Mag with a Conquest on it and never had any problems. Get very good rings. http://www.samplelist.com/Zeiss-45-14x44-Conquest-Rifle-Scope-DEMO-B-P2901.aspx That'd be my choice, great scope for an 8-pound gun, plenty of mag for stand hunting. Another option is the 3-9 or a Trijicon 3-9. I don't recommend Leupold scopes, there are better scopes available for same or less money.

I hog hunt allot too, you want a Trijicon 2.5-10. Everything I have listed previously is great for all-around. For hogs, get the 2-5-10 or the 3-9. Either will be considerably better than Conquest for your intended purposes. They may cost a bit more than you have budgeted (might not, you can find them used) but it will be worth the wait.

I ran a 3.5-10x40 for 20+yrs on a .300 mag. Perfect power range I think. I DEFINITELY like RC's recommendation.

Howdy Selkirk,
Welcome to the OT forum! At your $600 price point, you have some very fine choices available to you. RC's recommended 4.5-14 Conquest w/Rapid -Z800 reticle would be a great scope match for a .300 Weatherby. While not known as a fast- sighting or low-light reticle, Rapid-Z reticles are visible and useful well past legal hunting times in many states; at least, mine is with my antique eyes. Since you already like the Conquest Rapid-Z lineup, there's also this model to consider: http://www.samplelist.com/-P2224.aspx The 3.5-10x44 has a greater field of view at the low- end than the 4.5-14 version and would make for faster target acquisition on fast- moving tuskers, or other game. The 3-9x40 might also be worth a look. The 3.5-10 and the 4.5-14 both have 3.5" eye- relief and the 3-9 has 4". All would be sufficient for a braked .300Roy. If you are setting up the rifle primarily as a hog rifle and you can hunt at night where you live, then as others have said, you might want to choose an illuminated reticle scope and not be so concerned with the rifle's longer range capabilities. Your friend's Leupold sounds like he's selling at a good price if the scope is not beat up. VX-3 has very good glass- easily as good (better?) as a Conquest (imho). The Boone and Crockett reticle likely wouldn't be quite as useful as a Rapid-Z for ranging, but the Leupold's reticle would be a little faster sighting and the 50mm objective would be useful in low light hunting- it's a fine scope. One final consideration- once you start to stretch a rifle's legs past about 600 yards, then the rifle's inherent accuracy and environmental factors really start to come into play. You'll want that rifle to shoot at least MOA for long range and you will have to practice 'doping' the wind, etc... practice, practice, practice. Edited by Alan Robertson - June/26/2011 at 09:47 |

Oh, more scopes- This Leupold VX-R seems to combine the best of both low light and holdover reticle:

I like the Trijicon and VX-R options for your hunting uses. The turrets will work for dialing dope on the range, but tactical-style would be better. You could get a VX-R, and have Leupold add a M1 elevation dial, or work out a CDS turret system.

The answer is Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 Z-Plex #20. That is what I have on my 300 Wby MkV in Warne Rings.. That's plenty of power and very good optics. You have to spend twice as much to get better
optics than the Zeiss Conquest. I am very happy with it's dull light ability. |

I'm with RC. The 4.5-14x44 Conquest with Rapid-Z 800 is the ticket for a hunting rifle out to 400 yards. That's what I take to an area where the shots could be long. The rapid z reticle is great, and simple to use if you put the time in to learn it. I had this scope on a 6 1/2 lb .300 wby for several hundred rounds, and it's been on this one for several hundred rounds, and before that a .270 WSM for a couple thousand rounds with no problems so far.
