That is correct for teh zeroing.  For focusing the reticle you are right the rear eyepiece will turn, there is a "nut" that puts up against that. Loosen that first so the eyepiece will turn more freely and they dont' turn together.  Then looking at a blue sky for short burst, turn the eyepeice to get the reticle as sharp as you can on 9x,  once you have that spot tighten the nut back to the eyepiece and enjoy.

Thanks SVT, being new at this game I feel so inadequate about sighting in and getting the right accuracy. I have a few dumb questions about this scope and I don't understand why they don't make a manual for it.Devil

To keep cost lower.  They are really simple to use as well and even if they did make a manual for it, it would get overlooked by 90% of the users.  They stuck with the K.I.S.S. method and it works.

Appreciated,

I loosened the eye piece and now understand how it works.

When sighting in my other question my friend told me if I wanted to sight in my rifle at 200yds I could do it by sighting in at 30 yds. Comments? I don't know of a place close by that has an open range of 200yds.

That depends on the ballistics of the particular rifle/round.  And even then you need to always verify by actually shooting. 

Just assuming that is the case on any rifle is flat out wrong.

NO sight in for the distance you want to sight in at.  If you cant sight in at 200 then sight in for what you can.  It will make changing it easier later if you want.
One trick to sighting in that will save you some ammo and time is to get the rifle in a rest or on something solid, pull the bolt out the gun (assuming this a bolt gun), and look down the barrel.  I normally try to find something anywhere from 30-50yds away.  once you get the bore of your rifle centered on that, adjust your scope so that the crosshairs are centered on it as well, make sure to keep check to make sure it doesn't move.  This will normally get you on paper if done correct and you can fine tune from there.   Once of the greatest designs of the 3-9 is it being FFP and having turrets that match the reticle,  If you see your shot is exactly 1mil low and 1 mil right dial in 1 mil up and 1 mil left and your should be dead nutz on the next shot.  I do recommend usign 3 shot groups to confirm before making adjustments.

Yes, that is true. I will zero in at 30yds and then eventually find a place where I have clear 200yds to verify it.

Another question pls,

The magnification, once I'm zeroed in and I magnify up to 9 will my target still be at zero on 9 as to 1?

you mean will your zero change from 3X to 9X?  no.  the relationship compared to the reticel will but your zero will not.

Yes, I was told to do what you suggested as to taking the bolt out and looking through the barrel. Mainly at night to focus as far as possible on a light.

I currently have a 10x42 ss and was wondering if the new HD version has as many internal MOA of adjustment that the previous version does. Also, is the new HD glass night and day compared to the non HD 10x42? Thanks for your advice!

I have both HD and standard.  My HD has 36 mils of adjustment so that is over 120 moa. 

Yes the glass difference is huge.  I would say night and day difference.

Thanks supertool73, I appreciate it.  Glad to hear they still kept the really big range of internal MOA.  I guess I will wait and see what SWFA comes with to me with a trade-in offer... but looks like I'll be picking up the 10X very soon!

I just wanted to add how great the 10x42HD is; I can see my 50 cal holes at 300 yards through this scope. When I looked through my Pentax DCF SP 10x42 binoculars I could not make the holes out. I thought these binoculars were really great but was surprised I just could not see the holes. My friend had a pair of Swarovski binoculars in 10x (do not know the model number) and they were no clearer or brighter than the 10x42HD.
i just wished they came with some type of manual.
PS- I am also here in Prescott and would love to know of a place where it was safe to range out to 1000 yards plus. Any ideas?

Hi,
 
I'm also considering buying a 3-9X to put on top of an AR-15.  I will be putting Magpul BUIS on the rear, can anyone suggest a quick detachable mount (American Defense or LaRue models?) that will let me mount the SWFA 3-9X on the AR-15 and still clear the Magpul BUIS?

Got the 10X HD this week, mounted her onto the Savage today.  Just looking through the scope, wow... you guys were right.  The difference really is night and day.  The colors and brightness and detail are much improved.  The glass is really clear, I'm very happy with the optics.  Another thing was the turrets are GREATLY improved.  With my regular non-HD 10X, the elevation knob felt ok, not great.  The windage knob had pretty mushy clicks, even after wiping the grease away.  Not so with the HD.  The clicks feel great.  In no way did I think the 10X sucked, cuz it didn't.  But wow, the new HD is really nice.  Glad I made the purchase!

Ok, went to the range yesterday to sight in the new 10x HD.  I noticed my parallax setting was kinda off.  At 100 yards, the 100 yard crosshair setting still moved somewhat.  Around the 75-80 yard setting, with the target still at 100 yards, the crosshair was still.  That seems to be significantly off? 
 
Is there any way to remedy this?  My original SS10X non HD was dead-on.  Is it possible to fix this myself?  I noticed a flat-head screw on the parallax adjustment ring.  Can I re-adjust the parallax setting so that there is no crosshair movement at 100 yards, then unscrew this flat-head screw, rotate the parallax adjustment ring  until the hash marks line up with 100 yards, and re-tighten down the flat-head screw?

Never depend on the numbers on the dial.  Always set your parallax while looking through the scope.

You could do that if it was a side focus because the screws are just holding the dial to the actual assembly that moves the parallax lens but in the case of the rear parallax the dial part of the actual assembley and that screw goes right to the mechanism that moves the lens.

I always thought that the difference in parallax yardage setting and actual yardage was due to the diopter setting. Since the diopter setting changes the power of the eye piece. So your yardage maybe less or farther than the listed yardage depending on how you have to set it for your eyes. Or is there not diopter setting on the HD?
