Hey guys,  i new to the spotting scope world and i need some good suggestions on where to start and what to look at.  I live in colorado and will be mainly using it for hunting purposes.  I want something that is got some decent optics and will hold up.  i have been reading alot of reviews about different scopes and have looked through just a few such as the vortex nomad and the redfield rampage.  I have also heard some good things about the the theron saker too but dont have any clue if there is a place to go where i can look through it.  My budget is under 500, any help would be great.

It's your coin, but I'd save up until I could get into something with HD glass.  If you're gonna use it for hunting and looking at longer ranges, you'll want all the clarity and resolution you can get.  You'll save money in the long run if you save up for a better scope.

Keep an eye out on the sample list.  There are sweet deals to be had from time to time.

By the way, welcome to the OT!

IMHO the ED glass is worth it.
Save some more and get a scope with ED glass.
I would look at the Nikon 50mm ED as a baseline..light, compact and a over achiever optically.
Vortex has some ED glass at decent prices, going up to a 660 Kowa ED is a step up both in price and capability.
Because of mirage and environmental problems like dust, fog, etc., larger may not work better.
Try the Nikon, many people have given up larger scopes and find its high quality and small size make it for them the ideal hunting optic.
Good luck.
Art

Good day.
