Now I know there are differences. I had a 77 Scout that was 4 wheel drive with a transfer case, high and low range, but it wasn't true 4x4. Got stuck on a hillside with a front tire on rock and the other side rear wheel on rock and the other 2 wheels in mud. Only the wheels in mud were spinning.
Lynn that was definitely a 4x4 but you had open differentials.  If you had limited slip or full lockers you'd have never slowed down.
That's one of the reasons I chose Rubicon.  It's the only vehicle I know of that can be order trail ready with locking diffs.

BTW,  In the crawling arena we found that we incurred a lot less drive-train breakage if we either changed to front locker to limited slip or left it open.  This reduces the amount of binding in the drive train when all 4 are gripping.

If Skip is differentiating 4x4 versus all time 4WD then that's not the same.

Actually very few vehicles are truly all the time 4WD.  Subaru and some of the euro sportscars come to mind.

Most all the rest are some form of 4x4 with different methods of switching in and out of it.  Then there is the axles....  manually locking hubs, auto locks, vacuum controlled (Jeep) and electric controlled.

The more drive-train parts there are spinning the more drag there is in the system an the less MPG you get.  One of the biggest hits against 4x4s IMO and hence all the different methods to unlock or disconnect drive train parts when not immediately needed.

In most of the newer 4x4s all this is hidden and computer controlled, so those that don't think about it or know something about 4x4s never realize what all is taking place in their drive-train....

Bud, the best 4x4 I ever saw was the M37 Dodge Power Wagon, military version. A friend of mine had one and he never made any modification to it that wasn't military, such as a heater and defroster, and steel roof. I saw him drive it in places I wouldn't ride with him in. I'm almost positive that when it was in 4WD, all 4 wheels were pulling.
At a construction site next to his shop, he would go up and down piles of dirt and rock 30-40ft. tall. Scared the crap outta me just to watch. I don't think there was one he couldn't get over. That was one tough truck. Hurt my feelings when he sold it.

I do believe those old power wagons were awesome!  However if they were really all the time locked 4 wheel drive they you couldn't turn them without binding in the drive-train so they wouldn't work on pavement.

It doesn't take much at all to bind up any 4x4 on pavement with it in 4WD.

Unbeknown to me my son had snuck out in my Cherokee a few years back and while playing in a parking lot in the snow he found a snow cover cement curb... busted the alloy wheel... he put the full size spare on but it was a different brand tire and about 1/2" smaller diameter then the other 3 tires.

Heading into town late in the snow everything was fine until I hit about 300 yards of road with clear pavement.  It was like I had pressed hard on the brakes, it brought me to a stop in no time!!!

I was clueless as to what was going on and thought I'd have to be towed.  I managed to get the car off onto the shoulder where there was still snow and as soon as I got the right side tires into the snow the D-train un-bound and she almost leap forward.  That was the only clue I needed and I got out to check tires thinking one was pretty low on air as even that will cause binding.

That's when I found the oddball tire....  He got it both barrels when I got home!  Made him find and buy me a new alloy 5 spoke rim to replace the one he creamed....   Kids!

I go up my drive all the time in 4x4 in the F-250. If I forget to take it out of 4x4 when I get to the top of the hill the truck will remind me when I try to turn it, even on gravel.

I know long ago some Blazers were full time 4WD.  A real pain in the ass.

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota that is All Wheel Drive....it goes into action if it feels it needs to.  I can also pull the lever and throw it in 4 wheel drive if I want to....either Hi or Lo....

I only used LOW once in my life in a giant mud-snow bog in New Mexico back in 1980....( I must have been doing 10000 RPMs!! )   Shocked  It was a 1979 Bronco.  A good truck in mud and stuff...but terribly rough on bad roads.  Too short.

I had a similar problem with my Scout. With a 100" wheelbase and a big 345cu. in. 2bbl V-8 it got kind of squirrelly at anything above 60mph on the highway, and it still had plenty of gas peddle.

Aside from the bouncy, being-too-short ( anything in the back end would fly up in the air off the floor when you hit a major bump! ) ---I liked the Ford Bronco.

I flopped that Bronco over on it's left side once in Colorado  Bucky   Big Grin  ---but that's another story!

Party
