Messman Third Class Doris Miller, USN, was awarded the Navy Cross and several other medals for manning anti-aircraft guns ( even though he had no training in their use) and attending the wounded. Doris Miller did not live out the war. He was killed in action in 1943 when the Linscombe Bay was sunk by a torpedo in the Battle of Makin. Doris Miller was from Waco, Texas. One of the three YMCAs in town is named after him. I drive the school bus for the After School Program and bring kids to the Doris Miller YMCA every day.... There is a big plaque over there honoring his service to America. |

Forty years ago I lived in a rooming house in Freeport, Texas run by a Mrs Green....she was born in 1899....she and her family had come down from Marshall, Texas when she was 5 years old to Freeport in a covered wagon......
Mrs Green lost a brother who was on the ARIZONA on December 7, 1941.... |
